Dearest Online Family and Friends:  It's a pleasure to once again be able to vibe with you.   Greetings to each and every one of you.   I truly hope everything is fabulous in your life,  and with your families,  as well as in your world!

I hope your Labor Day Holiday was peaceful and wonderful;  as well as this past week.

For my husband - Todd and I,  our time over the long Labor Day weekend was spent listening and viewing the Trinidad and Tobago Members of Parliament debate the important issue of extending the country’s State of Emergency  (“SOE”)  that was imposed on August 21,  2011.

Please,  kindly bear with me as I share my thoughts and feelings,  plus ask questions regarding my country’s  (Trinidad and Tobago)  State of Emergency.

Needless-to-say over the entire weekend looking at,  and listening to the debates I was left feeling disgusted;  and so very sick of the ignorance I observed and heard!   The fighting,  blaming and debating with facts,  figures and statistics of years past from the Ruling party  -  “The People Partnership”  (“PP”)  of how the Opposition party  –  “The People’s National Movement”  (“PNM”)  took the country to the awful state it is in now specifically regarding crime.   I particularly heard through all the rhetoric from the  “PP”   [Do not question our party’s decision to call a State of Emergency…you brought us here while you were in office,  so be quiet and stop with the questions of why we did what we did  (impose this SOE).]

Frankly,  I felt they had wasted my time with this debate,  because nothing was brought to light regarding taking such drastic actions.   It was just a room full of ignorant and obnoxious people simply playing the  “blame game,”  and constantly bashed each other and each other’s party.   I strongly felt a major personal fight was taking place,  and not a fight for the people…the citizens of the country they serve.   OBVIOUSLY THIS COUNTRY HAS NEW GOVERNANCE,  BUT THE SAME OLD POLITICS WERE AT PLAY.   [Hum,  all the change the Citizens voted for was not/and has not taken place…it was just the same old mess,  but with a new party.]

As I examine what I heard further,  I am still left in awe  (today)  over their overt disrespect for the people/citizens and felt it was wrong to be questioned regarding their true decision to impose the SOE,  as well as the extension for it to be upheld for 3 additional months.   However,  any right thinking member of society [citizen]  would/should question the true reason for the SOE;  but NO true or clear explanation was given during these several days of long drawn out debates regarding why the sister islands were placed under this State of Emergency,   nor why the  “PP”  felt the SOE needed to be extended for 3 additional months.   Which,  by now you must have heard has been voted upon and passed.  (Of course it would pass,  after all the ruling party  -  “PP”  is the majority in Parliament.)

Well…Well…Well,  YES we are hearing loud and clear the SOE was imposed due to the CRIME situation…GANG situation.   However,  how could this be the case when  The Anti-Gang Act  was passed and recently implemented to handle the gang/drug situation;  and most importantly the National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy made a statement regarding the percentage of citizens who are actually committing the crimes:

“…This nation can’t continue to be held to ransom…,” said Mr. Sandy, noting that the crime was being perpetrated by 0.003 percent of the population.

One would think with this small number of citizens who are actually perpetrating these crimes,  surly the Commissioner of Police and his Police Force could have easily apprehend these 0.003%  WITHOUT the entire country being placed under a State of Emergency.   Whereby,  stripping the citizens of all their human rights.   [Bursting into their homes whenever they feel like it;  ransacking and destroying their personal property;  in many cases brutally abusing them;  as well as arresting them and throwing them in jails without explanation.]

A Recent Example of a citizen being arrested under the State of Emergency

This past Tuesday night a Trinidad Radio Talk show host  (media personality)  from i95.5 FM  -  Mr.  John Gill was awaken at 1:30 am by a loud pounding at his front door!   When he looked out he saw 2 police vehicles,  with at least 16 armed Police Officers in his yard.   They asked if he was John Gill and after he said yes;  they stated:  “You are under arrest.”   They proceeded to arrest Mr.  Gill and placed him in the back of a police vehicle and took him to Arouca,  Trinidad Police Station.   He was then placed in a small cell with 8 other  people,  2 of which were accused of murder.

Keep in mind he still had no idea why he was arrested and was not informed of why for at least 4 hours.   After the 4 hours a police official read Mr.  Gill his warrant,  and said he was wanted for a $200.00 TT traffic ticket  (Approximately $33.00 US);  which they claimed he had not paid.   Several hours later during the morning Mr.  Gill was place in the back of a hot van for at least 45 minutes before he was taken to see the magistrate in the Arima,  Trinidad Court house;  where he was then released  (Personal Recognizance.)

However,  the above example is of a media official  (who was able to share his story…his ordeal.)   Hum,  this is one of the media officials who has shared his feelings publicly and openly on the airwaves about the State of Emergency.   Hum…Hum,  could it be that due to Mr.  Gill’s position he was released?   Hum…Hum…Hum,  I can’t help but wonder is the media being targeted?   And if so,  why?

I truly cannot understand why such an arrest in the manner it took place is being done under a State of Emergency;  how is what John Gill arrested for a threat to the country?  [Remember this is only a traffic violation for a small amount of money;  not a murder,  not a crime,  nor any violence committed by Mr.  John Gill!]   Honestly,  one has to wonder:  was this really about an outstanding ticket;  or was it a message to the rest of the media?   INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!

Now,  the important question in my head is:  how many other folks are being detained for no serious reasons...in-fact for NO REASON WHATSOEVER?   How many others have stories like this,  we are not hearing;  and who are still jailed,  without any way to reach their families or the media to share their stories?

Facts recently announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Communications

To date during the State of Emergency 1,597 persons were arrested.   From that figure a total of 437 are arrested on gang-related charges,  plus another 287 are arrested for drug offences  –  not sure of how minor or major  (Currently arrested under the Anti-Gang Act.)

Therefore,  I wonder who are;  or what is taking place with the other 873 citizens who are being held in poor conditions,  without bail,  without their families knowing where they are,  without knowing what will happen to them.   I understand too~~~the ratio of the race of people who are being arrested is disturbing since a very high percent are of African decent.

So you see friends,  family and follow citizens;  many in Trinidad and Tobago are being dragged out of their homes at all hours in the night/morning by large amounts of armed Police Officers for minor traffic violations.   Many are being physically abused by Police Officials for no apparent reasons;  and property are being destroyed in the process.   Many folks with mistaken identity are also being picked up and being held in jails/detained for enormous amounts of time.   I understand too,  that quite a bit of citizens who are behind in their Child Support  (Called Child Maintenance in Trinidad and Tobago)  are being picked up,  charged,  and detained/held in jails.    Many are stating they were not entitled to make a phone call to alert their family/relatives/lawyer/etc.   The facilities where the arrested are being held from many accounts are described as inhumane…the conditions are very poor.   WOW,  MARTIAL LAW…RIGHT?

Hum,  it is clear that The Powers that be…The Forces that be are clamping down on the people.   In fact,  clamping down on the entire society in Trinidad and Tobago and their fundamental human rights and freedoms clearly are revoked.   The people are suffering badly.   And THIS ABSOLUTELY DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE…it is pure madness and heart-wrenching as well.   INQUIRING MINDS REALLY DO WANT TO KNOW!

Did the ruling party  (new administration)  ever considered how deeply this would affect the people of the country?  Moreover,  affect their state of life,  and even their livelihood?

Due to the curfew imposed economically many are being effected.  Those who earn a living from working in various jobs:  Casinos,  Gas Stations,  Hotels,  Nightclubs,  Restaurants,  Movie Theatres,  etc.;  as well as owners of businesses that make a majority of money during the hours the curfew is upheld are suffering.

According to Diego Martin, Trinidad - North/East MP Colm Imbert

Business is down in Trinidad and Tobago  "across the board"  by at least 30 per cent, and some in the restaurant and hospitality sector have suffered a 75 per cent reduction in income since the declaration of the State of Emergency.   Even banks are affected.   He further added that:  “A number of businesses in Port of Spain had seen a 50 and 75 per cent reduction in revenue.  "People are out of jobs in certain establishments,  the working hours of other persons are being reduced in hotels and restaurants because people can't work at night anymore...there is an concomitant effect on their income and they can't make their payments to the banks for loans for vehicles,  for consumer items, for appliances.   There is already a significant effect on the banking sector and I know that they  (the Government)  know that."

Additionally he  stated: Businesses were afraid to speak negatively about the State of Emergency for fear of being penalized.

..."From the research we have done, the consensus from the businesspeople who have been speaking to us privately, because they are afraid to talk.  Remember  you have imposed an emergency regulation that if one publishes anything that is critical of this government,  that if someone says anything that would lead to disaffection,  that they going to be locked up.  That is in the Emergency Powers Regulation."

Currently to many this “FOR THE SAKE OF CRIME” explanation for the SOE is no longer working!   Oh NO,  not for the citizens at home or abroad;  especially since it was stated that there has been a reduction in crime since the new administration took office.

I am going to take a few more moments to examine this madness further  (only for clarification and sharing;)  and I invite you to share and help me understand what is going on.

1.   Lots of talk coming from within the country,  as well as outside specifically from media sources regarding the SOE being called to halt all Political Organization from meeting with members to stage protests,  etc.   Moreover,  it has been stated that Trade Unions  (approximately 19 unions)  had planned on proceeding with a nationwide strike against the refusal of the  “PP”  Party  (the ruling party…the new administration)  for refusing to lift a 5% cap on wages.   [The Unions strongly feel the SOE was specifically called to stop the campaign that was initiated to raise public awareness regarding this issue.   Further, the Unions feel the SOE was imposed to assault their freedom of assembly;  freedom of association;  freedom of movement;  and freedom of expression.]

2.   A few days ago the National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy stated that the SOE was imposed to avert a  “major national crisis”  and refused to elaborate on the  “crisis”  he mentioned;  he only stated:  “we prevented a crisis of unprecedented proportion which would have made 1990 a Christmas party.”  Of course,  folks were left to wonder what in the world he was talking about.   Immediately rumors surfaced that the crisis may have been a story that had surfaced regarding 2 missing containers of guns.

3.   A day or so later after Brigadier Sandy made the announcement I mentioned above,   reports surfaced  (through many local newspapers,  and news media,  as well as many media outlets locally and abroad)  that the SOE was imposed because Columbian Drug Lords & Gangs intended to retaliate and kill Trinidad gangs  (The Columbians were set to go on a bloodbath)  over a recent drug bust worth $22 million that was confiscated/seized at the Piaco International Airport.   From all accounts this was the major crisis that was averted.   Headlines read:  "Colombian Drug Gang Bloodbath Averted"

Honestly,  if # 3 is true then it is outrageous;  and makes no sense!   How can a country be held hostage from threats from drug dealers.   To make matters worst it has been reported that The Columbian Government has sent a Diplomatic letter to Trinidad’s Government stating to the effect:  “why were they not informed about their citizens who are entering their country to commit these terrible crimes?"

Gees,  I ask what is really going on in this country;  and why such drastic measures are taken by imposing a State of Emergency until early December of 2011?   What is really going on in the country for such drastic measures to be taken?   Why was the civil and fundamental rights of the citizens needed to be taken away…why did it need to be stripped  (why does it seem that the Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago is being dismantled?)

Before I close out,   I have two more questions that I wish to get answers for.

1.   Why through all of this madness,  the President of Trinidad and Tobago George Maxwell Richards has decided to leave the country for a month’s vacation (apparently in some part of the US.)   Should he not be in his country during this serious State of Emergency?

2.   As much as I love,  respect,  and admire our Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar,  the recently announced news  (via local and international media)  that she plans to leave her country (in a couple of week;)  along with her Cabinet in the middle of such a serious crisis to attend a meeting in New York,  is alarming and disturbing.   This is a State of Emergency that she called,  and yet she intends to leave her beloved country and the people she serves to attend a meeting abroad?   This makes absolutely no sense!!!

NONE OF IT MAKES SENSE;  and I say once again,  what’s really going on  in Trinidad and Tobago?   My discussions and questions above is only to try and make sense of the situation,  and it is my right as a concerned citizen to do so!!!

I close again this week by saying:    Even though it is difficult during these poignant times in Trinidad,  I know many of you still have faith in your social ideals and values,  and most importantly in DEMOCRACY;  and absolutely have the capacity to deal with any difficulty  (such as what is taking place in Trinidad and Tobago today).   I know this faith;  as well as prayer will keep you strong and united;  and will carry you through this difficult time.   I strongly feel it is important that us the citizens work together NOW to build a bright and promising future for our country…we can overcome any task or difficulty that is placed before us UNITED.

I feel it absolutely important to share with you once again the 4 part series of a fantastic and positive video on Trinidad and Tobago,  which ends with the sister islands gaining their Independence.   These series are entitled  “This Land Of Ours.Click on each picture to launch the videos.  [Courtesy of the Ministry of Tourism, and powered by YouTube.]

One Flag,  One Land,  One heart,  One mind,  One hand placed together as one…”TOGETHER WE ASPIRE…TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE!”   I pray that the dreams of a new tomorrow come true for all citizens of my great country of birth.  Trinidad and Tobago.

Thanks to many of you my on-line family and friends for your wonderfully educational and extremely thought provoking feedback.    I must also thank my husband  "Todd Mangatal"  for his great input regarding the many discussions,  research,  and his assistance in the conveying of this important issue. Thanks for graciously tuning into the country's news, when I am unable to...when I simply don't have the time to do so.

Again,  share with me your thoughts on the above issue.   I am always delighted when I receive them; so please keep them coming in, as it helps me to learn and improve my way of thinking and seeing things.

So,  I move forward to talk about the 10th Anniversary of a sad and devastating attack on America.   An attack that was heart-wrenching for many of us.

This Sunday,  September 11,  2011,  marks the 10th anniversary of one of the worst day in American History,  and which many of us will never forget.

Remembering 9/11/2001

Yes,  we will never forget right here on American soil,  4 hijacked planes each crashing into different targets:  (1)  the North Tower of the World Trade Center,  New York;   (2)  the South Tower of the World Trade Center,  New York;   (3)  The Pentagon in Washington DC - American Airlines Flight 77;  and  (4)  in a field in the state of Pennsylvania - United Airlines Flight 93.

On this very sad day we held our hearts,  covered our mouths in disbelief,  and in distress we cried because of what was taking place right on our American soil,  and most importantly we cried and mourned for the many lives that was lost on that day.   From this very tragic event we lost nearly 3,000 precious lives,  all from different nationalities and religion,  which included Firefighters and Police Officers.   What a horrific day this was for all in America and for many around the world  [one of the worst in the nation's history.]   On this painful day by the grace of God many survived,  but many were badly injured and/or burned severely (40% of the survivors were burned).

I remember asking some years ago via this E-Newsletter where you were,  and what you were doing when America stood still for a moment,  when America’s soul was ripped out,  and when America cried and mourned deeply for so many lives lost.

Do you remember where you were,  and what you were doing?  I’m sure all of us do!

For Todd and I,  we were moving along with our daily routine like many of you were.   I have shared my accounts of that awful day in the past,  and I share it once again below.   I implore you to share with us what your day was like...your experience on this horrifying day.

When the first  (1st)  plane at 8:46am struck the World Trade Center North Tower in New York,  and the second  (2nd)  Plane struck the World Trade Center South Tower at about 9:03am;  we were engulfed in deep conversation as we were heading to Tyson’s Corner,  Virginia.   We are not quite sure exactly at what point on the road we were at;  but our route at that time on a daily basis was from Maryland to DC~~~ crossing over the 14th Street Bridge~~~ and entering George Washington Memorial Parkway to Tyson’s Corner.   However,  we were so engulfed in what we were discussing that the radio was very low;  but once I got to my destination at around 9:55am,  and got into my office I realized what was happening.

The TV was on,  which was strange and my colleagues were engrossed in the TV and was not speaking.  Some were in tears,  and many had lost color to their skin.   Which was baffling to me.   Once,  I focused on the TV and saw the towers in flames;  and realized that planes were hijacked and had slammed into the towers;  I became instantly panicked and worried,  because I had just left Todd’s side and all this was taking place.

My first thought was we need to be together  (who knows  “this might be the end”,  which so many of us talk about).   I immediately picked up the phone to dial Todd’s number but at the same time my line was ringing and it was Todd trying to reach me.   He seemed to be in disbelief as well.   After our conversation,  we decided it was best for him to return to my office.

We actually couldn’t believe it,  and was thankful that we had just missed witnessing the 3rd  plane crashing into the Pentagon that took place approximately 9:43am.   [We had missed this by just a few minutes since we had just passed the Pentagon,  as we were getting off the 14th Street Bridge and was entered on to George Washington Parkway.   Actually,  we believe it must have passed over our car without us noticing it,  since it was reported that the plane approached the Capital made a couple of turns,  and finally began descending on to the Pentagon.]

Todd immediately returned to my office and was just in time to witness the falling of the South tower around 10:05am.   In the meantime,  Flight 77 had already hit the Pentagon,  so we noticed the Fighter Jets whisking by my office window at top speeds  (which was a real sight);  and as we were glued to the TV in disbelief,  we witnessed the collapsing of the North Tower at around 10:28am.

Due to the painfulness,  it took some time to get our composure because what we were witnessing was beyond words and beyond comprehension.   Once we did get our composure,  we figured it would be best to head home.   However,  that was a nightmare in itself; because it was one of the worst traffic days in history,  and from my recollection one of the hottest days as well.   We were on the highway for hours,  watching all the military helicopters,  and army vehicles filled with army personnel hustling by all around us.

From my recollection;  it was the most gut-wrenching,  dreadful and surreal day for me,  I was numb!  As we all know and experienced,  the hours and days thereafter were pretty hard to bear  (for all of us).

Personally all I could think about during the time was the pain those who were trapped in the building were enduring,  feeling sickened as I watching on TV the many who jumped out the windows of the buildings;  and watching their bodies fall as they appear to be like birds falling from the sky.   I remember praying  “Dear God...please send your angels to capture these souls as they fall;  so that they will be nestled in the arms of your angels in comfort, as they are taken to you in peace.   I hoped that many didn’t suffer,  that their end was swift,  and that they were indeed in the arms of their God!    What a very horrifying day September 11, 2001,  was for all of us!!

After so many years have passed,  please remember the approximately 2,974 lives that was lost on this tragic day.   I ask that you keep the many families and friends of all the victims in your thoughts and prayers...they will forever mourn the lost of their loved ones.    Hum,  I wonder how are these families doing today?

The Survivors~~~Obviously,  these survivors  (even though they have suffered and may still be suffering physically and mentally)  are thankful to be alive.   However,  there is no doubt the thought of that horrendous September morning  (the 11th)  will forever be lodged in their minds,   as well as the victim’s families minds,   and even yours and mine.

We  must always keep this tragic incident in our minds and in our hearts,  because this was a day most of us here in America felt powerless,  and the incident itself was unfathomable and left us all grief stricken.   Yes,  we must always keep this in mind - losing so many lives at one time and in such a short time.

God bless America,  God bless all the men and women who lost their life on September 11, 2001;  and God Bless their families and friends as they struggle to move on with their lives after enduring such pain,  suffering and losses.   The healing will indeed take a lifetime and their memories will be vivid for years to come!!!

Remember The Victims of Katrina & Natural Disasters Continue

Another devastating and destructive incidents that occurred in American history is Hurricane Katrina.  Which took place 6 years ago on August 29, 2005.   America’s greatest natural disaster:  The horrifying and destructive 3rd category storm “HURRICANE Katrina

HurricaneKathrinaEye.JPG (19980 bytes)Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast 6 years ago,  and due to its storm surges hours after it made landfall the levees around the city of New Orleans,  Louisianahurricane_katrina-1.JPG (48323 bytes) were breached causing massive flooding throughout the city of New Orleans  (approximately 80%)  and many surrounding cities,  including many coastal cities in Mississippi.

This was the most destructive disaster in U.S. History and many lives were lost;  many families were separated;  and many homes were completed destroyed.   Actually,  New Orleans lost 1/3 of its population  [approximately 1836+ deaths],  plus more than 800,000 citizens were displaced;  and due to the flooding the city was completely destroyed and wrought approximately $110 billion in damages,  making it the costliest hurricane in US history.   [Seven states and more than 15 million people were affected.]

The most upsetting,  sickening,  and disgraceful thing for m;  and for most of America about this storm was the slow response for help from the US Government to the grief stricken and frustrated victims and citizens of New Orleans and surrounding areas.   I certainly will never forget the images I saw on the news/media,  which was overwhelming and which I never thought I would see happen on American soil.   The hauling of people into the Superdome as if they were not human beings,  but were cattle;  the dead that was laying in the streets,  and the tears of grief stricken children,  mothers,  sons,  fathers,  daughters and entire families begging for help.

I understand the struggles to rebuild the city and for the citizens to rebuild their lives after these 6 years have been disheartening and slow.   Yup,  6 years later things in New Orleans are slowly improving for the (Katrina)  survivors,  even through all the hardships they have endured.    CLICK HERE TO READ AN UPDATE [Courtesy of the Associated Press-written by: Cain Burdeau, and Kevin McGill reported/printed by The Grio.]

On a more positive note,  I read on the 6th Anniversary President Barack Obama spoke about the need for  vigilance.  He stated:  "The sixth Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina illustrates the need for the Federal Government to respond as best it possibly can to Natural disasters."

To read about any progress [or very little] that have been made to rebuilding this city and the lives of the citizens of this city PLEASE CLICK HERE [Courtesy of Huffington Post)!   And for an extensive report on the progress, etc.  CLICK HERE!  Once on the page click on the "Full Report (located on the top left).  (Courtesy of The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center]

As I close I ask you to keep the many who are suffering from the massive flooding on the North East  (USA)  [my area of residence]  from the constant rains that have been falling NON STOP over this entire week.   Which has resulting in major flooding;  roads and bridges collapsing,  folks losing everything due to the floods,  and schools and business being closed for a number of days.

Keep in mind also the ongoing wildfires that are burning everything in its path in Texas.   Schools and residents have been evacuated,  and there are many road closures.   To date over 3,582,000 acres have been burned across Texas.

Finally,  say a pray for the those in Japan who recently endured a  killer Typhoon earlier this week,  where many lives were lost and many people are missing.

Since this month is National Preparedness Month,  I urge you to get yourself and your family prepared for any natural disaster that may occur (whether it be a hurricane or earthquake;  or any disaster for that matter).   To learn more about preparedness log into www.ready.gov; or www.fema.gov; and finally CLICK HERE TO obtain a Hurricane Safety Checklist (since we are in the midst of Hurricane Season.) Hollis Lashley message to the Arious Family

Hello Arious Family: I just thought that this piece was appropriate to be quoted on FlashPoint.  I hope you agree.

"Bill Cosby: I'm 76 and Tired"

I'm 76. Except for brief period in the 50's when I was doing my National Service, I've worked hard
since I was 17. Except for some serious health challenges, I put in 50-hour weeks, and didn't call in sick in nearly 40 years. I made a reasonable salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, it looks as though retirement was a bad idea, and I'm tired. Very tired.
I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it.
I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honour"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tells them to.
I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries use our oil money to fund mosques and mandrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in Australia, New Zealand, UK, America and Canada, while no one from these countries are allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia or any other Arab country to teach love and tolerance..
I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate.

I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses or stick a needle in their arm while they tried to fight it off?
I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of all parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.
I'm really tired of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or big-whatever for their problems.

I'm also tired and fed up with seeing young men and women in their teens and early 20's bedeck them selves in tattoos and face studs, thereby making themselves un-employable and claiming money from the Government.
Yes, I'm damn tired. But I'm also glad to be 76.. Because, mostly, I'm not going to have to see the world these people are making. I'm just sorry for my granddaughter and her children.   Thank God I'm on the way out and not on the way in.

Jamaican Born Poet, Critic and Writer - Mr. Edward Lucie-Smith Lecture

6:30 p.m.

Edward Lucie-Smith (1933– ) is a British poet, critic and writer on art who was born in Kingston, Jamaica and settled in England in 1946.  He read history at Merton College, Oxford, and has worked mainly as a freelance journalist, radio broadcaster, and author; he has written or edited about 50 books, mainly poetry anthologies or popular works on 20th-century art.  Mr. Lucie-Smith will give an overview of contemporary Jamaican art; and address, if pertinent, the difficulties of placing Jamaican art in international events like biennials and art fairs, the relationship between the Jamaican artistic Diaspora and the Island Country art scene, and what kind of relationship might those factors have with the socio-cultural realities in Jamaica and the rest of the English-speaking Caribbean.

All events are free and open to the public.
