Hello On-Line Family and Friends:  Happy Sunday to you!  I do hope you are doing great this Labor Day weekend, and everything is absolutely wonderful with you, your family, your surroundings, and in your life overall.

If you are feeling anything like I am; then you are feeling a deep sense of sadness by the news and images of the havoc, heartache, and devastation many people in New Orleans, Louisiana are enduring because of Hurricane Issac.  What a Déjà vu huh?  And weird too that this hurricane struck New Orleans, LA and Mississippi on the Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina (that struck New Orleans 7 years ago, as well as Mississippi and several other states.)

Hurricane Issac lingered for days dropping enormous amounts of rain, causing massive flooding and destruction.  We must keep the people of New Orleans, LA; Mississippi; Florida; and even Haiti in our thoughts and prayers.

As you must know last week was an important week for the Republican Party here in the United States, due to them holding their convention.  Interesting folks they all are, and with truly interesting mindsets and policies!  I observed a few things, which I will hold off on sharing with you until a later time…perhaps next week.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING – AND THE TRUE REASON FOR THIS WEEK’S E-NEWSLETTER [even though I am a little late] - is to CONGRATULATE my Country of Birth “Trinidad and Tobago” on its historic 50th Anniversary of Independence…its Golden Jubilee!  This lovely twin Island of the Caribbean ~~~ in fact this GREAT NATION has come a long way, and has accomplished some great things.  I am so deeply proud of the history, the culture, the people, the growth and accomplishments; and also my rich heritage.

My little way of celebrating my country on this historical accomplishment is by using our (AEG) means of communication to share its history.  Therefore, we at AEG salute Trinidad and Tobago, and dedicate this entire E-Newsletter to the lovely Twin Islands.  It may be a little lengthy, but well worth the read.

Gosh, so many important things have transpired throughout these 50 years!!!

Several of our beautiful women have accomplished being crowned in major international beauty pageants (namely Miss Universe and Ms. World.)  Our athletes have had much success in the Olympics wining several medals throughout the years.  Many of them have surpassed in sports, and some have broken records: Cricket, Golf, Netball, Football, Javelin, cycling.  Many from the shores of this lovely twin Island have become super famous due to their professions: singers, actresses, actors, dancers, choreographer, directors, writers, etc.  And quite a few of them have won prestigious awards (Grammy and Tony, to name a few.)

Our country has grown tremendously throughout the years, which the Government credits to “the liberation of the economy and fiscal policies that were introduced.”  Specifically though, the country has seen a lot of growth in (1) Economic Development, which can be credited to (a) Energy – the increased oil and natural gas productions, which made T & T the leading producer of oil and natural gas in the Caribbean.  And  (b) increases in Construction and manufacturing industries.  (2) Social Development; and (3) Industrial Development.

The country has overcome some “hard hitting” incidents!  They have survived a "coup d’etat" against the Government, 3 “State of Emergency,” hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods.

Needless-to-say, the political arena has been as chaotic as the Politics here in the United States (filled with corrupt politicians, doing some of the most corrupt and senseless things.)  As they say in my country “it has been full of Bacchanal .”

Our Carnival has been dubbed “the greatest show on earth.”  And without a doubt it is!  The most beautiful costumes have been produced by some of the most talented designers.

Ohhh...the music produced and performed by the many brilliant Calypsonians, and Soca Artists have captured us year after year.  Plus, the steel band music continues to be the sweetest music of all time! The Steel Pan: the National Instrument of T & T, and is the only new acoustic musical instrument to be invented and accepted world wide in the 20th century.)

I can keep going on, and on, and on, talking and sharing about my lovely country; but I will let you read some of what has transpired throughout the years, its accomplishment, and even its pitfalls via a “Timeline” I prepared; which holds historical accomplishment, facts, events and issues that has taken place in Trinidad and Tobago beginning from the year we obtained Independence - 1962 to Present.

Kindly scroll down and check out this interesting “Timeline.  Please bear in mind I am far from perfect; so I am sure I have missed some important facts, events and issues.  Whatever I have missed I ask you to pleaseeeee send them to me so I can add them to the timeline.  And as far as errors/mistakes, I tried catching all; but I’m sure I missed some as well.  Therefore, I ask you to also let me know what they are so I can make the change (if you so happen to come across any.)

I leave you with a quote I have used in the past, and I ask that you continue enjoying this lovely 50th Anniversary weekend.

undefinedOne Flag,  One Land,  One heart,  One mind,  One hand placed together as one…”TOGETHER WE ASPIRE…TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE!”

I pray that the dreams of a new tomorrow come true for all citizens of this great country, as well as absolute unity among all.  Most importantly I pray that we continue to grow and prosper.  I pray that God bless the people, and finally I pray that God continue to Bless our great Nation - Trinidad and Tobago.

It is important that I thank the Trinidad and Tobago Ambassador to the United States His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Neil Parsan, and his entire staff on the wonderful Golden Jubilee Reception that took place on Independence Day [Friday, August 31st] at the Organization of States in Washington DC.  It was truly an evening of elegance, filled with a variety of entertainment celebrating T & T’s culture, which included a spectacular performance by the lovely and talented Calypsonian Denyse Plummer; delicious authentic T & T cuisine and taste beverages/cocktails.  It was an awesome 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Please do continue enjoying this long Independence Weekend Trinidadians and Tobagonians!  For the Folks in the U.S. HAPPY LABOR DAY TO YOU.  To the folks who are enjoying all the Carnival festivities, and Carnival in New York; please have a fun, but safe time.

I have to wish a few important people a very Happy Birthday.  Iman – I hope your birthday was wonderful dear niece!  Happy Birthday to John Parker, John Rowell, and Montre’.

Now, kindly scroll down to see the “Timeline of historical accomplishment, facts, events and issues that has taken place in Trinidad and Tobago from year 1962 to Present.”

Timeline of historical accomplishment, events, issues, and facts that have taken place in Trinidad and Tobago for the last 50 years - 1962 to Present

It is important to begin with a series of videos on Trinidad and Tobago entitled "This Land Of Ours."  It is a historical journey throughout the years, which ends upon Trinidad and Tobago gaining their Independence.  This interesting 4 part series offers us a great opportunity to reflect on who we are as a country, and from where we have come.  Click on each picture to launch the videos.  [Courtesy of the Ministry of Tourism, and powered by YouTube.]

Dr. Eric Williams remain Prime Minister upon Independence.  He was the leader of the first political party “People's National Movement” [PNM] – which emerged in 1956.)

Parts of Dr. Eric Williams Speech delivered on the first day of Trinidad and Tobago's Independence - August 31, 1962.

"...The first responsibility that devolves upon you is the protection and promotion of your democracy. Democracy means more, much more, than the right to vote and one vote for every man and every woman of the prescribed age. Democracy means recognition of the rights of others. Democracy means equality of opportunity for all in education, in the public service, and in private employment--I repeat, and in private employment. Democracy means the production of the weak against the strong.

Democracy means..."
