Dearest Online Family and Friends:  Respect and Greetings to each and every one of you.  I hope everything is great in your life, as well as in your world!

This past week has been like a roller coaster emotionally for me!  In these past 7 (seven) days I experienced moments of pride and joy, moments of sadness and worry, moments of intense fear; and even moments of which I had to delve way back into my past and search deeply through my innermost thoughts to bring forth some instances in my life that had been suppressed (for years)…for good reasons.

This past Saturday - 8/20/2011, I was overcome by emotions that inundated me upon our visited to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Site.  Such a glorious and historical site!!!!

MLKMemorialStatue-2011.jpg (12256 bytes)As I stood observing this magnificent structure, my eyes “welled up” a bit; because I never…ever thought a Civil Rights Leader…an African-American person would receive such a significant honor (at least not in my lifetime.)  Which is placed strategically among the Memorials of some of America’s greatest Presidents; on THE TIDAL BASIN in West Potomac Park (Southwest of the Mall.)  Dr. King’s beautiful site is physically located at 1964 Independence Avenue, SW, WDC; and specifically placed adjacent to Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, and between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial in a shady area surrounded by trees.  (The placement was intended to create a visual “line of leadership ~~~ from the Lincoln Memorial, where Dr. King gave his “I Have A Dream” speech at the March on Washington, to the Jefferson Memorial.)

The physical address being 1964 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington DC; with 1964 chosen as a direct reference to the 1964 Civil Rights Act that became a law (A milestone in the Civil Rights Movement in which Dr. King played an important role.)

The sturdy 30-foot high structure “Stone of Hope” is a true depiction of a brilliant and serious man FIGHTING for something; MLKMemorialOpening-1.JPG (31722 bytes)which was clearly revealed in his eyes, his posture, and even by the way his arms were folded across his chest (A VERY STERN/SERIOUS MAN).  So awesome…I was absolutely overflowing with pride as I gazed upon this wonderful site in awe; with its two (2) solid pieces of granite very near to Dr. King’s structure that symbolized the “Mountain of despair.  Finally, after regaining my composure, I focused on the handful of people around me and it seemed they too were in awe.

MLKMemorialOpening+Quote.JPG (34053 bytes)Reading the quotes from Dr. King’s speeches, which is etched in the crescent-shaped granite wall surrounding his memorial just gave me chills.  Truly, this entire experience was phenomenal for me; and I believe everyone must take the time to visit this memorial…HUM, I feel strongly as ever that this experience will be a great one.  WoW, perhaps you too will get that awesome feeling I got.

Keep in mind this Sunday – August 28th, on Dr. King’s 48th Anniversary of his “I Have A Dream” Speech, this outstanding Memorial was scheduled to officially be unveiled.  (Official announcements were made on Thursday night (8/25) that the dedication/unveiling ceremony is Canceled but will be rescheduled in a few months; due to the weather...the approaching Hurricane-Irene.)  However, go ahead and CLICK HERE to log into the Memorial site to see all the details; or log into http://www.dedicatethedream.org.

Additionally, I got word that the National Action Network’s Rally and March that was scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 27th in Washington DC has been canceled. I imagine this too will be rescheduled.

August 26, 2011-
Due to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. being closed this Saturday and Sunday and Mayor Vincent Gray’s decision to cancel his DC State March so he can prepare residents for Hurricane Irene, Reverend Al Sharpton, National Action Network and the co-chairs of the August 27th March for Jobs and Justice are delaying the march until the new King Monument Dedication date is set. http://nationalactionnetwork/press/national-action-network-march-postponed/

As I bring to closure my thoughts and information on this momentous Memorial being unveiled (now canceled).  I leave you with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech.  PLEASE CLICK HERE TO READ THE ENTIRE SPEECH.  Please note due to copyright claims by EMI Publishing the actual footage of Dr. King delivering his speech is no longer available for viewing.

Trinidad and Tobago celebrates its 49th Anniversary + The Lock Down "State of Emergency"!

Sadness and worry crept into my world as I learned the country of my birth - Trinidad and its sister Island Tobago has been “LOCKED DOWN,” and is in a “STATE OF EMERGENCY.”  All for the sake of controlling crime!  Yes, all of the rights of the people are temporarily stripped, and the constitution of the country has been suspended…in the name of crime prevention!

Without a doubt hearing of this drastic measure did something to my heart; and I panicked and became instantly worried about my family’s safety.  After making the necessary calls to my family; and made contact with my husband Todd’s relatives there; it was clear they had taken the news “with a grain of salt.” In fact, there was really nothing they could do but to adhere to the rules laid out in the “Executive Order;” that was presented by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar regarding this "State of Emergency" on Sunday, August 21, 2011.  [Ironically this "Executive Order" was sent to the President of Trinidad and Tobago - Mr. George Maxwell Richards for his signature.  (By all reports this in itself is a bit strange…it should be the other way around ~~~ normally, the President would make the Executive Order and send it to the Prime Minister.)]

The Curfew will be in effect for the next two weeks from 9:00 pm to 5:00 am in huge amounts of areas; they call “Hot Spots.”  Keep in mind that the curfew can be extended for up to 6 months, and even longer with a majority vote from Parliament.  Lots of negativity that can come from this...for example...may be: (1) lost revenue of businesses and people that work in the business of the area that are under curfew; and (2) the limitation of movement for people to travel from the areas that are not under curfew to conduct business or work; could result in bad PR for the entire country; which could effect travel, tourism and investment in the country.

Hum, what a time for this to take place being that Trinidad and Tobago celebrates its 49th Anniversary of Independence in a couple of days (August 31st)!!!  Further, what a way to celebrate independence that so many have fought for, as well as their freedom and rights.

Honestly, I absolutely understand the island's (T&T) crime rate is a bit high; however, it is much lower than last year’s crime rate (at this time.)  And for drastically taking away everyone’s rights is amazing to me.  While a majority of the citizens in Trinidad and Tobago plus abroad see it as a good thing; I can’t help but look at the details of this “lock down”---State of Emergency and wonder why such drastic measures are needed.  It really seems like "Marshal Law" has taken place in this country to me.

1.   Citizens have no rights…All the rights of citizens have been suspended during this “State of  Emergency.  (Under the Constitution which was established in the late 50’s.

  • No Freedom of Speech

  • No Freedom of Religion (not truly free to practice religion.)

  • No Freedom of Press

  • No Public Gatherings or meetings (including Unions or any other type of organization that may be threatening to the state.)

2.   The police/security forces can enter your home and/or business and search without a warrant (without any probably cause.)  This can be based on a tip or whatever excuse they come up with.

3.   You can be arrested and detained for 72 hours without any explanation, and after a review you can be held for up to 120 days and to as high as up to a year...Without any bail or trial.

4.   With a recommendation from the National Security Advisor, any citizen can be arrested for no reason (just based upon his recommendation.)

I find it excessively strange that it was necessary to take this plan of action since only .03% of the population of 1.3 million are violent criminals.  Especially since there was already a bill passed by Parliament a year ago (2010) called “The Gang Initiative Act of 2010” (which already covered entering and searching businesses and vehicles or person who are suspected to be a gang member, or those who are suspected to be involved with drug activity as well.)  The only thing it didn’t cover were rights to enter a private dwelling without a warrant.

Another thing that is very strange is that the current foreign high paid Police Commissioner (CoP) and his deputy police commission (from Canada) was also missing during this critical time.  It's mind boggling that they chose to leave the county a day after a massacre occurred in the city of Arima Trinidad; where 11 people were killed on the streets (which prompted this important State of Emergency).

I must say though, that you must be mindful that the government has not enforced many of these lost rights, but they can with no recourse.  This is very scary and disturbing!

As I think about this further, I find it very sad that society has deteriorated to this level where it is deem necessary to take such a drastic action.   With  deterioration of society such as this, it is our job (Citizens and Nationals of Trinidad and Tobago) to come up with solutions to solve some of these problems that is occurring in our homeland.

I really do need to get some feed back on this, so please feel free to say something.

In closing I quote our (Trinidad and Tobago's) "Coat Of Arms": TOGETHER WE ASPIRE AND TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE!  Further, together we can keep our nation strong and proud.

Happy 49th Independence Trinidad and Tobago - The sweet and Lovely Island of my birth!

A friend called me late last night and informed me about a video blog that famous Trinidadian Comedian Rachal Price completed and posted regarding the state of Trinidad and Tobago due to the "State of Emergency".  It seems we share some of the same views.  Therefore, I feel it is necessary to share her comical, but serious and interesting viewpoint on this situation.  Be mindful that it has some adult language, but it is interesting and a must see video blog.  CLICK ON RACHAL'S PICTURE BELOW TO ACCESS THE VIDEO BLOG AND HEAR HER WORDS. Scary Natural Disasters

I cannot close out this e-mail without mentioning how shamelessly terrified I was during the 5.8 earthquake that struck many parts of the East Coast this past Tuesday (8/23/11).  By my reaction to this quake, it was clear I had forgotten how scary and vicious an earthquake can be.  This brought back memories of our earthquake experiences while Todd and I were residing in Southern California.

This past week's quake was truly powerful.  For me, I experienced the entire floor of my office moving violently (which is located on the ground floor of a building in Washington DC).  My desk was moving intensely as well. While grabbing the phone to call my husband Todd during the quake to make sure he was OK, that too was moving.  By no means was I the brave soldier I try so hard to be at all times…It was absolutely awful and I was certainly in fear.

After coming to my senses, I ran out of my office and called out to my colleagues/associates; but got no reply.  I finally ascended the steps to the upper level, not thinking clearly that I needed to get out of the building.  However, once I arrived on the upper level I noticed everyone was shaking as much as I was,  with fear in their eyes.  And so the sharing of everyone’s experience begun.

Honestly, this quake was NO JOKE, and I find it strange this has occurred in an area in Virginia which has NO FAULT.

Now, today we are buckling down for Hurricane Irene, that is making her way furiously up the East Coast.  From all accounts she is intense, and is expected to slam into our area by late tomorrow (Saturday 8/27/11.)  Even though all reports indicate Irene will have high winds and massive amounts of rain; I pray she passes over us with very little impact or damage.  I pray that everyone is kept safe; and I pray that we all come out of this disaster with absolutely no losses.  BE EXTRA SAFE EVERYONE HERE ON THE EAST COAST!!!

A Special Thanks to all!

As I close out, I must thank so many of your for your valuable feedback regarding my last week’s commentary onThe Family, “The Immediate Family,” “The Extended Family and the “Inclusive Family  Thank you so much for sharing your personal experiences.  I am always overwhelmed with the amount of sharing and even support I receive from you my on-line family and friends.

One of my favorite things about being able to write and share in such a unique and professional manner is that while there exists a very small few who ignorantly criticize loudly and anonymously, the majority of you my On-line family and friends are amazingly gracious and supportive.  For you I am deeply grateful.

With this being said, I must share the effects of some personal feedbacks I received from my "extended family;" which was more negative than positive - (with very harsh words being used [on their part.])  Dreadful incidents and experiences, I obviously pushed deep within my heart, mind and soul many...many years ago was brought forth from these exchanges/feedback from extended family member/s.  After delving way back into my past, and searched deeply through my innermost thoughts to bring forth these instances/incidents/experiences in my life that I had suppressed; I was able to face them, and analyze them head-on.  And with the help of Todd, a light was lit...a very bright light; and things began to become ohhhh so clear.  Oh how I sincerely thank my “extended family” member/s for their feedback.  It truly did a world of good for me to face some terrible issues that had been tucked away for years.  I also thank Todd immensely for helping with this to occur; through his soulful and honest talks, guidance and protection, and even his phenomenal writings over this past week; something that was once heavy, unbearable and truly difficult to face has been removed.  The details of this I must, and intend to share with you our On-Line family; but as time passes and the healing continues, I will share it!  Indeed, I will share it so you too can learn and know that you are not alone in your experiences (be it bad or good) ~~~ so that perhaps you too can bring some things to closure with your “extended family.”
