Dearest Online Family and Friends:  Respect and Greetings to each and every one of you.  I hope everything is marvelous in your life, and in your world!

Family” means the world to me and to many!  And it’s truly a blessing having a loving and supportive family!!!  However, the meaning of “Family” or the word itself; is defined differently by others [individually!]

Some weeks ago a series of events, written and verbal exchanges occurred among those in my life I call “extended family;” (actually a better word to use is relatives) that had me debating, discussing, defining and redefining the word “Family.”

For me personally, my closest loved ones are MY FAMILY.  In fact, they are my "IMMEDIATE FAMILY" (my husband Todd, my mother, my brother along with his wife and lovely daughters, my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, father, even my deceased brother and father-in-law.  Plus [LOL] I must not forget the Pet.)  These are the people in my life I absolutely adore, cherish and keep near and dear to me always…they are my heart…they are what I call MY FAMILY, and whom I am so very thankful for!

Due to some circumstances, extreme commitments and my schedule, I found I would not be able to be a part of a wedding party for an upcoming wedding (being held out of state) for an “extended family” member/relative.  After some serious thought and debating over it being such a great honor, as well as juggling and rearranging; I found there was absolutely no way I could make it on the day I was required to arrive.  Therefore, I gathered all the strength I had and informed that "extended family" member of my problem; and expressed my sincere regret, as well as distress over not being able to partake in this special occasion.  Needless-to-say this news never rested; and some relatives have been feuding over it, and my definition of family.  As a matter of fact their attitudes over the entire situation is truly nauseating.

Throughout my life though, and maybe in yours as well…have you found some members of your "extended family"/relatives to be nutty? I certainly have!  And my way of dealing with it: is to stay far...far away from them.  Is it wrong???  I simply don’t know, but I do know my life has been very peaceful and happy living in this manner.  I however have always stayed clear, and very far away from the many nutty ones who find joy in the constant disgusting, negative and hateful talk about each other; as well as about me.  In fact, I find it extremely irritating!

Unfortunately, I fell into my "extended family"/relatives silly trap by responding to a crazy e-mail; which basically detailed their definition of “family” (not mine); and ultimately what they feel “family” should mean to me.  Moreover, they suggested some foolish ways in which I should partake in fixing/mending our “dysfunctional family.”

Being that I have NEVER been close to these people...my "extended family" (relatives); I responded the best way I could particularly pointing out the distance I have had, and kept (successfully) with "extended family" throughout my life.  I also pointed out due to the embedded problem within the family ~ specifically with the “old heads;” I feel there is really nothing I, or the younger generation could do to help fix our family…SIMPLY BECAUSE THE OLDER ONES WILL TEAR IT APART!  They will absolutely NOT change their nutty ways, their attitude, the blaming of others in the family for the god-awful mistakes they have made in their own life, and their constant negative distasteful chatter about who, this, that, or the other; SO WHY WASTE THE TIME!  I simply WILL NOT TOLERATE IT...I have too much on “my plate, ” and too much to accomplish in my life.  And the time needed to do so CANNOT be wasted on something I know will not result favorably for me, or everyone (for that matter.)  Besides, many of my relatives have their own families they must nurture; love; guide; and most importantly train to respect; and live with each other in peace, love and harmony.

Of course, no one understands my mindset and my attitude; so I am hopeful the definitions I have complied of the different levels of what “family” means to me somewhat explains my approach, and my attitude (to this issue and/or problem.)

I know everyone of us have a definition of what family is, and what constitutes a family.  Indisputably, with the definition comes a different meaning and/or understanding of what their family make up should look like.  In fact, researching about family helped me to revisit responsibility and accountability.

  • "Family" is really about your spouse and children; and the other very important people in your life who you love dearly, and who are your heart and soul.

  • "Immediate Family" is made up of you closest loved ones, the ones whom you trust the most, the individuals who you feel safe with your inner most secrets. They could be you mother, father, brother, sister or grandparents, etc. "These loved ones are the ones who provide you with the guidance and sage advice which shapes your life and establish your foundation [as a young adult.] Thus, these are the people who provide you with that sense of responsibility and understanding of what is right and wrong...Inherently, we always want to do right by them ensuring we do not disappoint them with our decisions and actions."

    •  "Our foundation of behavior is very often built by this group of people and the influences they impart in our lives are responsible for us being able to make sound logical decisions, which afford us an opportunity for expansion in our lives at which point we expound on the lessons and experiences of the extended family member."

  • "Extended Family" is made up of our next closest loved ones, meaning our uncles, aunts and cousins. They are the group of people whom we trust and look to for advice on life's lessons; because often times their actions and lives have ventured outside of our immediate families.

Please note: the "Immediate Family" and "Extended Family" members described above plays a huge role in our lives by providing love and support for us when we are experiencing periods of isolation, despair or loneliness. Oftentimes these moments come when we are removed from the daily interaction with our immediate and extended family members (all at different periods in our lives.)

  • "Inclusive Family" are those like you my on-line family!  The inclusive family can also take the form of friends, church members, local community members, etc; and quite often they fill the void which is left by our immediate or extended family whether in a time of crisis, despair or just in everyday interaction.

Perhaps the above explanations of the different levels of family may help the many who do not understand me; the way I feel about this family thing; or refuse to accept my mindset and attitude on mending the dysfunctional "extended family" of mine.  Further, regarding my attitude on the entire situation; I leave you with an interesting poem by Charles Swindoll

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude, to me; is more important than facts.  It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do.  It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill.  It will make or break a company…a church…a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.  We cannot change our past…we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.  We cannot change the inevitable.  The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude…

I am convinced that life is 10% what happiness to me, and 90% how I react to it.  And so it is with you, “family”; “extended family” and “inclusive family” we are in charge of our Attitudes.

~~Charles Swindoll~~

Again, share with me your thoughts on the above issue.  I am always delighted when I receive them; so please keep them coming in, as it helps me to learn and improve my way of thinking and seeing things.

Dedication of the Historical Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington DC

Oftentimes, I look back over life and many important accomplishments drift across my mind.  A smile always come across my face because some of these accomplishments were only dreams, and many I just knew would never come to be [in my lifetime;] because they were just too big.  In fact, they were historic!  Hum...over these past few years, I have been left in awe; because I have seen things happen that I never thought would happen in my lifetime!

This important accomplishment I am referring to was one that seemed truly difficult at the time.  Oh, how I remember so vividly the marches on Washington fighting to make Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday a Holiday...the freezing wintery/snowed filled days  marching, listening to many inspirational speakers, the lovely musical talents performing their hearts out; just to make this one dream become a reality.  And it certainly did become a reality...WoW!!!

TODAY, ANOTHER IMPORTANT DREAM HAS BECOME A REALITY!!! A dream that has certainly seen its share of ups and downs, highs and lows, negativity, pains, and even joys.  However, it is completed; and the day is here for its presentation to the world...its unveiling...its dedication!!!

On the 48th Anniversary of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have A Dream" speech - August 28, 2011; the dedication of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial will take place. This historical and magnificent memorial will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's national and international contributions and vision to the American dream...a dream he spoke of in terms of possibility and hope...and its pillars of freedom, democracy and opportunity for all [justice].  This memorial is one of the most prestigious sites remaining on the National Mall; it is on the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin adjacent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, between the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial.  Although, this is not the first memorial to an African American in Washington DC, Dr. King's will be the FIRST African-American honored with a memorial on or near the National Mall area and only the fourth non-President to be memorialized in such a way.

Sunday, August 28, 2011, President Barack Obama will deliver remarks, and performances will be by singers Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder.  Additionally, Filmmaker George Lucas (a major financial contributor to the Memorial) and Actor Jamie Foxx will serve as Co-chairs for the dedication of this stunning and phenomenal Memorial.  Other individuals will partake in the ceremony including members of the King family, as well as prominent civil rights leaders such as: John Lewis, Jesse Jackson, and Andrew Young.

On Saturday, August 27th, an interfaith prayer service is scheduled at the Washington National Cathedral, as well as a day-long youth event and gala/pre-dedication dinner at the Washington DC Convention Center.  The Official program will begin on the 28th with pre-dedication events at 8:45 a.m. The dedication ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. and a post-dedication concert will follow beginning at 2 p.m.

Please note events will be taking place beginning on August 22nd, and will continue throughout the week until August 28th. (A full Week of Dedication)  For a full schedule of events, actual location of dedication, tickets, etc.  CLICK HERE to log into the official "Dedicate The Dream" site for the events schedule to obtain all the specific details!  Please note there are several events FREE to the public, so scroll down the "Schedule of Events" page for every detail and please go ahead and visit http://www.dedicatethedream.org to learn more!

The official vision statement for the memorial notes:

Dr. King championed a movement that draws fully from the deep well of America's potential for freedom, opportunity, and justice. His vision of America is captured in his message of hope and possibility for a future anchored in dignity, sensitivity, and mutual respect; a message that challenges each of us to recognize that America's true strength lies in its diversity of talents. The vision of a memorial in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. is one that captures the essence of his message, a message in which he so eloquently affirms the commanding tenants of the American Dream — Freedom, Democracy and Opportunity for All; a noble quest that gained him the Nobel Peace Prize and one that continues to influence people and societies throughout the world. Upon reflection, we are reminded that Dr. King's lifelong dedication to the idea of achieving human dignity through global relationships of well being has served to instill a broader and deeper sense of duty within each of us— a duty to be both responsible citizens and conscientious stewards of freedom and democracy.

Harry E. Johnson, the President and CEO of the memorial foundation, added these words in a letter posted on the memorial's website:

The King Memorial is envisioned as a quiet and peaceful space. Yet drawing from Dr. King's speeches and using his own rich language, the King Memorial will almost certainly change the heart of every person who visits. Against the backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial, with stunning views of the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson Memorial, the Memorial will be a public sanctuary where future generations of Americans, regardless of race, religion, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation, can come to honor Dr. King.

Please go out and be a part of this historic dedication...this historic unveiling of the National Martin Luther Jr. King Memorial!!!

Finally, as it has been done every year; the Rev. Al Sharpton will convene his annual march in Washington to celebrate the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" Speech.  I received final word that Rev. Sharpton and his National Action Network (NAN), along with partners in labor, education, civil rights, and clergy from across the country, will hold a mass march for jobs and justice on Saturday, August 27, 2011 ~~~ the weekend of the historic unveiling of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial on the National Mall.

A rally preceding the march will begin at 12:00 (Noon) at Constitution Ave NW and 17th Street NW.  The march will begin at 1:30 pm to the King Memorial site on Ohio Drive, SW; and West Basin Drive, SW.

This rally and march will be held by thousands of members of the civil rights community and all those who continue to push for equality across the board; and it is being co-chaired by Rev. Dr. Franklyn Richardson, Senior Pastor of Grace Baptist Church & Chairman of National Action Network, Lee A. Saunders, Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME), and Randi Weingarten, President of American Federation of Teachers (AFT). The National Director of the March is Pastor Willie F. Wilson from Union Temple Baptist Church. The March co-host is Tom Joyner from The Tom Joyner Morning Show.

Honoring Marcus "Mossiah" Garvey

This past Wednesday (August 17th) many around the world celebrated the 124th birth date of the Powerful Honorable Marcus "Mossiah" Garvey.  Every year I have honored him by sharing with you some of my thoughts which was capture in a piece I wrote some years ago [I was honored that this piece was published in The Caribbean-American Weekly, New York some years ago.]   In addition, I have once again shared with you a captivating documentary on Mr. Garvey entitled "The Influence of Marcus Garvey", which details the heroic and innovative ideas of Marcus Garvey, as well as his life's progress and achievements.  There are 5 parts to this documentary, and I have added all 5 parts below. Courtesy of Kane – The Prodigal Son “ProdSun83” and powered by YouTube.

Marcus Garvey was born in St. Ann's Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica in 1887, and he was known as a black Prophet, Philosopher and an extremely influential speaker.  His vision, which he was determined to carry out was the liberation of his people.  Many believed he was a Messiah, a true Prophet, giving the prophesy of the coming of the redeemer who was going to "deliver the black man from bondage, and who had come to save a people who for centuries had been exploited by another race".  He promoted faith in the Almighty Creator of Africa and the Black race, "who created his Black sons and daughters in his own image and likeness".

As I learned more about Garvey, it was clear to see he gave millions of Caribbean people a sense of pride and so enabling them to take their place in the world, Garvey stated "Never allow anyone to convince you of inferiority as a man.  Rise in your dignity to justify all that is noble in your manhood/womanhood as a race".

Garvey dignified African beauty and promoted a "Back to Africa" campaign with a plan for resettlement in Liberia.  He was truly a powerful speaker and when he spoke it was electrifying, he was known to have a "silver tongue", and with this tongue and the words that came from his lips he inspired 11 million people to come into his Association -  The Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), and African Communities League (ACL).  Garvey organized the UNIA-ACL to promote a spirit of race, Love and Pride; to administer to and assist the needy; to reclaim the fallen of the race; to establish universities, colleges and secondary schools for the further education and culture of the boys and girls of the race; and to conduct a worldwide commercial and industrial intercourse (to fund a strong Negro nation.)  The motto for the UNIA- ACL was/is "One God!  One Aim!  One Destiny", the association sought to unite "all the people of African ancestry of the world into one great body to establish a county and Government absolutely their own."  He promoted a steamship company "The Black Star Steamship, Co."  that would provide transportation for blacks to return to Africa.

Garvey traveled everywhere observing the working conditions and the living conditions of blacks throughout the region.  He visited Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Columbia,  Venezuela, London, and especially all across the West Indies; and clearly these poor conditions saddened him and made him more determined to obtain his goals.  He also witnessed in the West Indies the petty divisions that divided the islands, which he spoke about in his lectures and speeches "...You all know how the different West Indians despise each other, how the Jamaican despise the Barbadian and the Barbadian despise the Jamaican, and all the other islands hate each other.  The UNIA was founded in 1914 after my experience of travel in South America, in Central America, in all the West Indian Islands and in Europe seeing the need for greater unity amongst the black people of the World."  "Therefore, the American Negroes and the West Indian Negroes are one, and they are relics of the great African race which was brought into the Western World and kept here for 400 years".

Marcus Garvey through his plight to accomplish his goals endeavored lots of difficulties, as with every prophet throughout time.  Undoubtedly, it seemed he was loathed, criticized,  persecuted, maligned, scorned, and was even convicted (which his sentence was commuted by President Coolidge), and deported, but he stayed strong, held on to his celestial work with courage, resoluteness and strength, which enabled him to rise continually from whatever misfortunes he suffered.  He successfully built and consolidated the UNIA into an international organization, and because of his efforts by 1920 the association boasted over 1,100 branches in more than 40 countries (many located in the US which had become a base for the UNIA), he also had several branches in Central America and in the Caribbean countries.)

Marcus Garvey was truly a good man, that gave hope to a lot of black people and the black race on a whole.  He is considered in Jamaica a hero and was proclaimed by Jamaica as its First National Hero.  After his death in 1940, he was laid to rest in London due to travel conditions during World War II, however his remains which was exhumed and taken back to Jamaica  now lies at a shrine in National Heroes Park in Jamaica.   I close my piece on Marcus Garvey with one of his famous proclamation "Look for me in the whirlwind or the storm, look for me all around you, for, with God's grace, I shall come and bring with me countless millions of black slaves who have died in America and the West Indies and the millions in Africa to aid you in the fight for liberty, Freedom and Life."

In closing we at Arious send our sincerest condolences to the VP Records Family on the loss of their beloved Joel Chin, whose life was selfishly taken (gunned down) a few days ago outside his home in Jamaica.  35 year old Joel was the grandson of the pioneering reggae producers from Jamaica - VP Records founders Pat and Vincent Chin, and the son of Clive Chin.  He was also the Director of A & R (Artist & Repertoire) at the VP Records, and was very instrumental in launching the careers of several reggae stars.  We know the family is mourning this great loss (deeply;) and we pray that the lovely memories of Joel will help comfort them during this extremely difficult time of sorrow.  Please accept our deepest sympathies ~~~ our family and friends at VP Records...The Chin family!!!

Additionally, this week has been a very difficult one for 2 families in our community who are mourning the loss of their loved ones.

To our friend Cheryl M. (Theresa) our deepest sympathies to you and your entire family on the loss of your aunt. May the peace which come from the memories of loved shared throughout the years, comfort you and your family now; and in the days ahead.

To local Business owner Tarzan, we were deeply saddened to hear of your devastating loss of your dear loved ones!  We absolutely know the pain you are enduring and our thoughts and hearts are with you.  Hum...the sadness you and your family are feeling, certainly words cannot adequately express them; but please know that we are thinking of you during this difficult time, and we pray that the comfort of God help you in this time of sorrow.

Hello Arious family, greetings from the Universal Heart.  In answer to a question which was posed by a seeker, I have decided to write the following in 2 parts, as I attempt to explain what spirituality means to me. Be inspired and Motivated to increase your Spiritual Energy.

"Exploring Spirituality"

Why would anyone take time to listen to talks and to attend gatherings which pertain to Spirituality?
Could this urge come from a place which is so much deeper than those other aspects of our lives, that many of us must heed this constant call?
Could it be that when we decide to seek true meaning and fulfillment in our lives,  then we must turn to the seeking of Spiritual questions and answers?
If we are hungry, we look for food, and if we are really famished, then we seek to assuage our hunger even more. Our spiritual quests perhaps, do come from a deep hunger of the soul, even when at a conscious level, we cannot fully recognize this hunger much less satisfy it.
Many of us regularly partake of junk food which fills us up , but which cannot supply the nutrients which we need to maintain our optimum health. We all need the healthful substance of spiritual food to help us in accessing genuine power (authentic), and in order to lead us on the path of compassionate understanding toward our brothers and sisters on the planet.
Spirituality is not for the faint of heart, nor for cowards.
It is not overly concerned with our past history, our careers, our projects, or our accounts.
Spirituality is not about theories or individual religious lore.
It is for those of us who are courageous enough to face our deepest pain and fears, who are willing to explore the possibility of recognizing and honoring the hopes and strengths of our brothers and sisters.
Spirituality is concerned with going beyond the intellectual explanations of life, to plumb the depths of what lies beyond the physical.
Spiritual questions are explained heart to heart and soul to soul; not always comfortably, but with the intention of causing a transformation for empowerment.
Spirituality is about practicing love for each other, and in demonstrating ways of empowering each other and all.
Spiritual means having to do with the soul. It means making the effort to create with the intention of practicing harmony, cooperation, sharing and demonstrating a reverence for life. Authentic power allows your personality to be aligned with your soul, through your intentions.
Authentic power is the ongoing experience of being grateful for the experience of being alive, in good and bad times. It is living a life filled with meaning and purpose, even in the midst of being misunderstood by those around you. It is being able to enjoy unlimited creativity. It is being able to enjoy yourself and others, being fulfilled and fulfilling, and being able to appreciate life in all its manifestations; including those which we label as negative.
Becoming a spiritual person means becoming aware of out emotions, becoming aware of out intentions behind our acts, and being willing to take full responsibility for our choices and actions. We were all born with our spirituality intact.
A Practical Spirituality.
Spirituality opens up the portals of consciousness to realms of mystery and beauty and joys beyond our normal understanding of the world.
Spirituality when understood and practiced, frees us from fear and allows us to communicate with each other, heart to heart, and to actualize love practices.
Questions about Spirituality are couched in simple terms:
How can I demonstrate genuine love?
Why am I here on this planet?
Who am I in my total expression of life?
What is the cause of my pain?
How can I transform this pain into joy and happiness?
What is my purpose for being?
And of course the clincher of the bunch.
How can I serve others, how can I help?
There are as many questions about spirituality as there are people on our planet earth, but what is common to all of us is a need to find deeper meaning to our lives; the need to move from pain to joy; the need to find fulfillment and love in our lives.
Questions about spirituality challenge our need to understand and to apply authentic power principles to our lives, through changing ourselves rather than changing others.
These questions when answered honestly, allow us to change our anger into powerful humility, and our prideful superiority into a compassionate understanding of our oneness with all life.
In the words of the mystic Rasta, “Let’s get together and we will be all right.”
Do you love the truth more than you need to be loved? Then, though the world may not understand you, take the plunge into exploring your deeper spirituality.

CaribNation Television is please to announce the airing of a special television program, four years in the making:

"Haiti and the promise of education"

This remarkable story of The Centre D'Etudes Classiques De Meyer (CECM.), a school that refuses to fail. The Centre D'Etudes School is now 5 years old and has been filling a large void in the rural  Haitian community of Jacmel, and improving the lives of children beyond measure. They take pride in the fact that they are feeding and educating as many as 500 children, while dealing with inadequate funding, over crowed class size, and the challenges face by a community crippled by poverty and an ever increase parentless population. Yet they continue to preserve and progress.

The Earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, had a devastating impact on their building. However, with persistence of its leader, Madam Mirlene Charles and her family in Haiti and the United States, plus the continued support from strangers all over the world, CECM have been able to move forward with reconstruction efforts and resuming classes and activities for the children. In July, CECM held its first graduation ceremony, and CaribNation was there to capture the celebration, the pride, and the promise of Haiti's future leaders and builders.

This special episode of CaribNation is schedule to on MHz Worldview Network. It will be repeated on Wednesday, August 24 @ 11:30AM. Jamaican Born Poet, Critic and Writer - Mr. Edward Lucie-Smith Lecture

6:30 p.m.

Edward Lucie-Smith (1933– ) is a British poet, critic and writer on art who was born in Kingston, Jamaica and settled in England in 1946.  He read history at Merton College, Oxford, and has worked mainly as a freelance journalist, radio broadcaster, and author; he has written or edited about 50 books, mainly poetry anthologies or popular works on 20th-century art.  Mr. Lucie-Smith will give an overview of contemporary Jamaican art; and address, if pertinent, the difficulties of placing Jamaican art in international events like biennials and art fairs, the relationship between the Jamaican artistic Diaspora and the Island Country art scene, and what kind of relationship might those factors have with the socio-cultural realities in Jamaica and the rest of the English-speaking Caribbean.

All events are free and open to the public.
