Dearest Online Family and Friends:

How are you doing family? Are you enjoying life as much as I am?  I truly hope you are!

LIFE…huh???? Life - a very small word that has great meaning…in fact huge meaning!  I have found life is beauty…life is faith…life is confidence…life is patience…life is courage…life is friendship…life is laughter…life is sadness…life is joy...life is success...and life is love which brings completeness to our whole being.

Life is something we absolutely CANNOT take for granted, and we must try to live it to our fullest potential and in a godlike manner.   Gosh, 8 months ago my life took a drastic turn; and I began seeing how short it can be; as well as how precious it is!  You know, sometimes things occur in such a manner that you are knocked over and down for a moment; only so that you are able to analyze everything that is transpiring around you…in your life.  And boy did I see some things!

Hum, I was able to see that the burdens I have been carrying around for many years are unimportant; that the things and people I love so very dearly can be taken away without warning; that my goals are so close to being accomplished, yet because of barriers I have created I have been unable to reach them; and that the hateful people around me who really don't contribute to my life, or my successes simply doesn't matter, or exist in my world.  Even though I know working…and working…and working to live comfortably; is a temporary thing, I oftentimes find myself caught up in the vicious cycle, full of worry regarding stupid and senseless issues; as well as silly senseless people.

Life is too short, and you nor I should ever waste one single minute of our precious life squandering it on various unimportant issues, things or people.  There is a saying: “our attitude toward life determines life’s attitude towards us”; hummm, so very true!!!!  Therefore, let’s change our attitude, and try to take life one day at a time because tomorrow is NOT promised; and live it...live it...live it to the fullest!!!!!

I have found over these past 8 months that life is more than just working, planning, and saving.  Instead, it’s really about fun and enjoyment.  I say this because just a week ago an associate of mine suffered a series of strokes ~~~ a woman barely in her 50s.  This was truly unexpected and quite shocking; because her demeanor has always been cool, calm and collected.  However, it is clear NOW that inside she has been totally stressed, especially with work.  Work had become her life!!!  For a week, through the sadness I have been saying “WoW…I can’t believe this…I can’t believe someone so young would become so ill without warning…” Now her life has changed to working HARD towards her recovery!  Her speech is becoming clearer, and I pray she becomes completely mobile again soon!Susan&Todd.JPG (140068 bytes)

My husband "Todd" and I have changed our mindset on life; we feel it must totally be lived to the fullest potential, while still fighting for our dreams.  And every moment we get to do something fun: sneak away for quiet times, or just enjoying the special times we spend laughing, talking, planning, and traveling.  Plus doing things to accomplish our goals; as well as drinking and eating (healthy of course) WE WILL DO IT…WE WILL ABSOLUTELY LIVE IT TO THE FULLEST!!

I am ecstatic that this summer has really started off with a bang for us, and we have no intention of changing it.  Indeed, we will continue enjoying every moment of our life here on earth, even through the complex times.  And positively make the most of what we have…each other, [LOL] our pet, and our healthy happy life style!

Hey…you can do this too, just change your mindset!  Additionally, realize that life is too short, and that tomorrow is truly NOT promised!!

I close my thoughts on “LIFE” with a lovely poem that touched me; written by “Praveen” entitled “Ecstasy of Living

I remember the days
when my mind used to be
overrun with emotions and thoughts
of all things good and the worst;

As time went by,
with each new day,
and with a brand new life to look forward to,
my mind emptied itself in a flash, just like that;

With a cup of coffee in hand,
I sit back and think about the yesteryears,
smiling at the change that has taken over me
and the life that I have been blessed with now;

Strolling down the memory lane,
unafraid of the future,
blinded by the ecstasy of living
eventually, with eyes wide open,
I’ve come to understand, that
some things, including life, change for the better!

Jeanine De Bique - An Awesome Young Trinidadian Soprano - My thoughts of her Recital

LOLAs we continue enjoying life...right?  Well, last week I took the time out of my demanding schedule to experience something “different in life.”  Jeanine_&_Susan-11.JPG (76389 bytes)I attended a special Recital of a young Trinidadian Soprano – Ms. Jeanine De Bique in Washington DC at the Inter-American Development Bank; and it was a performance I will always remember.  This lovely young woman performed brilliantly, and her voice was ohhh so beautiful.

I must say though, that this kind of music is not something I am used to, nor to my usual taste.  However, Ms. De Bique impressed me immensely.  I found that her phrasing, breath control, plus her overall performance of the pieces she sang from Austrian Composer Hugo Wolf; renowned Classical Composer W. A. Mozart; and Spanish Composer Fernando Obradors were impeccable and quite enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed two (2) of Hugo Wolf songs she performed entitled “Blumengruss” English meaning “The Bouquet”; and “Er ist’s” English meaning “It’s Spring”; as well as Fernando ObradorsChiqitita la novia” English meaning “Tiny is the bride.

I was absolutely captured and thoroughly entertained by her performances during the TRADITIONAL segment.  This is where she sang a few Caribbean Folk Songs.  Oh dear, her rendition of the famous Trinidadian folk song entitled “Mangoes” in her divine tone was awesome; and the playfulness she projected along with her body expressions as she performed the popular Caribbean folk song “Murder In De Market Murder”…[Betsy Thomas Kill Payne Stone Dead,] was a little witty and entertaining.   She especially performed wonderfully the Jamaican folk song “Evening Time.”  Even though Ms. De Bique stated before beginning her folklore segment, that she feared she HAD NOT mastered the Jamaican dialect and phrases expressed in this song.  Boy…did she perform it beautifully!!!  I am in total disagreement regarding her fear of NOT performing this song well.  Actually, in my opinion it was perfect.  Her dialect, her delivery of the rising and falling phrases, as well as her tones were flawless…indeed her diction was exceptional; and her performance of this song was moving.

In fact, she performed “Evening Time” so beautifully that a woman after the Recital introduced herself to me; and indicated she was born in Jamaica.  She proceeded to express to me how magnificently Ms. De Bique performed “Evening time.  Her comments were very positive particularly regarding this song; and moreover, her remarks regarding Ms. De Bique’s overall performance during this Recital were extremely wonderful.

Ms. De Bique closed out her Recital by performing Spirituals; and this too was exquisite.  Her presentation, and rich sharp voice truly made the pieces she performed in this segment enjoyable.  Hum, it was very difficult refraining from clapping during this segment; and quite honestly it was the best part of the evening’s performance and an excellent climax of her Recital!

Ambassador_Parsan_&_Jeanine_De_Bique.JPG (51906 bytes)Overall Jeanine De Bique is extremely talented; and her moving performance was pleasurable!  She undoubtedly is a skilled soprano, and it is not difficult to see why she has won so many competitions and honors.  I am extremely pleased that I took the time to attend this Recital, because it is clear that this young lady is truly a great talent and very gifted.  She exhibited maturity; and her stage presence was beautiful.  Yes, I am sure there will be a lot more accomplishments in her future.  Big things are indeed in store for Ms. De Bique.

I must mention the pianist who accompanied Ms. De Bique - Ms. Rebecca Mordo, was a gorgeous young woman who played the piano extremely well; and with such eloquence and grace.  All the best to both ladies in their careers!  [The picture above on the left is of Ms. De Bique and I (Susan); and the picture above on the right is of (L-R) Unknown Gentleman; Ms. J. De Bique, Ms. R. Mordo, and Ambassador to United States The Honorable Dr. Neil Parsan.]

It is clear this summer will be an eventful one, and one full of fun and excitement.

Flashback-I_&_II-L.JPG (131173 bytes)We have received so much information regarding events scheduled for the next few weeks and months.  However, one in particular is being hosted by our own “FlashPoint” writer/contributor – Author Hollis Lashley.  This week’s “FlashPoint” describes Mr. Lashley’s upcoming event "Flashback".  So check it out below.  Keep in mind after reading, that this event will be perfect for you to come out and meet Mr. Lashley in person.

"FlashPoint" - Presented by Hollis Lashley

Be inspired and Motivated to increase your Spiritual Energy.

I will admit that times have changed, and that I cannot subscribe to the view that something is wrong with young people today. I have seen the changes in music, in attitudes, in moral responsibility and even in the way that our cultural expressions are presented; but, I will not find fault with these changes. Change is a constant in any society, and it is our responsibility at any age to understand the urge of the young to be different. What goes around, however, comes around and it is just a matter of time until yesterday’s discard becomes today’s fad, again.

With that being said, let me talk about "Flashback", the mature audience party. You may think that this is for old people like me and some of my contemporaries, but it is to celebrate much more than that.

My mind travels back to a time of pride in one’s culture. A time of innocence and companionships, trust and truth, safety and support, and a time when a village was really a place which helped to raise a child.

Walking home from school to go for lunch, passing open doors with curtains blowing in the wind, seemingly reaching out to greet the passers by. Listening to the Rediffusions blasting their midday programs, smelling the various dishes being prepared, watching nosy neighbors visiting when they should be home preparing food for husbands and children, and enjoying the sun trying to burn reason into stubborn brains.

I am again immersed in a Village world of spinning tops, flying kites, playing hoop, running jockey in the canal, going for moonlight walks in a group, thiefing a kiss from your girlfriend, and feeling as though you just climbed Mount Everest, stealing cane from Mr. Cropper’s garden and sitting with Pesch and Audley and Mike at the corner of Cicada and Plover Streets, talking about growing up, sucking cane, and leaving all the peelings for somebody else to clean up.

I look back at these times and I laugh with the keen awareness of a foundation built on cultural sensitivity, nurtured in the cauldron of practical experiences, and expressed in forging relationships of empowerment without egotistic motivations. I may be wotless, but I’za Trini from Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean, the US, and the world.

"Flashback" is not a fete to make money, although that would be welcome.

It is a celebration of an era of Pride, Innocence, Cultural relevance, Creativity, Togetherness, and the willingness to continue to forge  relationships built on our firm foundation of a knowledge of the past which we need to teach our young, and to remind ourselves that we have come from times of drinking from the wine of astonishment, and eating from the fruits of our powerful Caribbean spirit.

"Flashback" is to come together to reminisce, to dance as we used to, to hear the old music which we have thrown in a corner, to revisit forgotten times and occasions, to give a little fatigue and picong, to eat cooked food instead of fast food, while we leave our self importance in a large trash bag outside, until we are ready to leave.

"Flashback" is therapy without the $90.00 an hour fee.

It is a time of getting free advice for your problems.

Feel free to give advice if you wish. Talk to Bryan for tips.

Ladies, take your “Can Can” out of the closet to sun.

Gentlemen, take that old suit out of the dark, maybe just the pants.

Encourage your grands to come out and witness your pre bengay moves.

Tell them about Joey and Clarence and Panam and Ebonites and Combo music, about when steelbands used to play in fetes with music bands.

Talk to them about Calypso and Soca, Byron Lee and Sparrow, Lord Melody and Belafonte, Orchestra Aragon and Tito, Mento and Ska.

Bring them to hear the music which cannot die with age, but only mature.

Come out and lime with, friends, inlaws, outlaws, frenemies, who you like a little bit or very much, who like you or don’t.

Come out and free up, while you revisit a time of pride and achievement.

Todd suggested that I say something about "Flashback". Thanks Todd, for the encouragement to dive below forgetfulness and to review the pearls of my Caribbean heritage.
