Hello On-Line Family and friends: How are things in your life, and in your world? I pray they all is well with you and yours.
My Gosh, the heat was been a major issue in our area for several days during the beginning of this week; and it has been quite unbearable! Needless to say breathing while outdoors has been difficult for myself, and many. Of course, we have been suffering in our own little world due to our air conditioning unit in our home having a mind of its own; and working when it want to. But as my mom always says “God is Love…things will be alright”; and indeed it worked itself out, and things ARE all right. It has been predicted that this weekend will be rainy and a bit on the cooler side, and yup the meteorologist are absolutely correct. It is certainly cooler, and extremely lovely due to the rain constantly making music on my window panes with its soothing "pitta patta" melody.
I am deeply disturbed and saddened to learn about
the mass killings at the Century 16 Theatres in Aurora, Colorado (9
miles outside Denver,) that occurred yesterday (7/20/2012.) Our hearts here at Arious Entertainment Group goes out
to the family and friends of the 12 killed and 50+ who have been
What could have possibly gone wrong
with the lone 24-year old gunman’s mind? What could have triggered
him to do such a heinous crime? Or caused him to simply “snap,”
which obviously prompted him to premeditatedly burst into a
Theatre dressed in riot gear and a gas mask and open fire on the
crowds of people viewing the midnight showing of the new Batman film
“The Dark Knight Rises.”
This young man “James Holmes” of the city of Aurora in Colorado, selfishly and carelessly gunned down…took the life of 12 people, and wounded approximately 50+ others [a 3-month old baby was among the injured, a six year old, as well as several other children.] Mr. Holmes was apprehended by police in the parking lot of the Century 16 Movie Theaters; after police began receiving dozens of 9-1-1 calls directly after the shooting. He did not resist police officials stated.
My Goodness what
an extremely tragic, sad, and dreadful incident.
And America aches and moans with the family and friends of the
victims and the injured. It
is heart wrenching listening to the words of the many who survived
this madness first hand, and from the accounts of their personal
experiences it is clear the entire ordeal was awfully terrifying. (Via
their interviews with the media.)
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who have been affected by this terribly tragic and horrific incident/Massacre. May god comfort all who are mourning!

I was made aware of what ONE can do if they are ever faced with an “Active Shooter Incident,” [such as what occurred in Aurora, Colorado] - which I feel I must share with you. This information teaches you the proper steps of responding to an “active shooter;” which is vital to helping you protest yourself, and others if you are ever faced with such an incident. It helps and teaches you to: (1) identify/profile an “active shooter,” (2) how to respond when an “active shooter” is in your vicinity; (3) how to respond when law enforcement arrives; plus much…much more. Therefore, I urge you to go ahead and click on the following link; Courtesy of the United States Department of Homeland Security. http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/active_shooter_booklet.pdf
Before I close; let me share a little
of what I/we experienced during the festivities that took place last
As you are aware the historic
Baltimore/Washington “One Caribbean Carnival” took place over the
entire weekend of July 14-15th; and it was truly a
wonderful event! Of
course, as with every Caribbean Carnival it had its ups and downs;
glitches, foolishness; and to be quite frank behaviors from band
leader/s (one in particular) that was irresponsible, appalling
and vicious. However,
“all in all” it was a lovely and grand event that was extremely
We left our home a little later than we planned, but arrived at the staging area in perfect time to witnessed and experience the fun, camaraderie, music and Mas “first hand;” before the event got on the way. As one who has spent many years being a board member of the Organizing Committee of our local Caribbean Carnival, and who has organized a few small Carnivals (For The Smithsonian Institute and others;) it gave me great pride to see our culture in its full splendor and glory. As I walked through the staging area capturing photos, and talking with the Band Leaders and participants; I couldn’t help but smile broadly at the joy I saw in everyone’s face and the excitement they were exhibiting/expressing.
Since we were one of the sponsors of this event, we then headed to the Festival Site “Lake Clifton Park” to place our AEG and My Caribbean banners in key spots, as well as along the front of the stage. We then casually walked the entire festival grounds and chatted with the Carnival Officials/Organizers, and quite a few vendors who had worked with me in the past. I must say, there were many…many vendors; which including a large number of corporate vendors. In fact, we even saw a well-known female celebrity at a booth - [her beautifully decorated booth] all set up for a book signing; and the selling of the books she authored. This lovely celebrity was Ms. Bern Nadette Stanis who played Thelma Evans on the 1970s Family Sitcom “Good Times.”
After our duty, and fun tour of the festival grounds we headed back to the beginning of the parade. And along the way, we were hailed out by many in our community; who greeted us with respect, and I must add Love. Of course, we stopped; greeted; and chatted with every single one of them. By the time we continued our long walk to the beginning of the parade, we noticed the Mas bands were well on their way parading towards the festival site…looking extremely lovely.
WoW, what a sight it was, and what a feeling [a joyous feeling for me] witnessing the bands in their full colors, seeing the smiles on the masqueraders faces as they danced, jumped and marched in their costumes (beautifully designed, and even those covered in MUD, or in the color RED or BLUE) on the streets of Baltimore to the pulsating sounds of Calypso and Soca Music. It was a wonderful sight for me and for many as the streets were lined with spectators moving and swaying to the music.
The parade was awesome, and soon after
it ended a very large amount of spectators entered the festival site
where the REAL party began; with live entertainment, a variety
of Caribbean and American foods, all sorts of drinks (alcoholic,
and non alcoholic, plus even coconuts), shopping (arts and
craft vendors), and a nice evening “lime” with their friends
and families. In my humble opinion, it was super awesome!!!!
The festival continued on Sunday, and
it was fabulous…the turn out was really great.
Indeed it was a fun filled family day, because the little ones
were running and playing as their family looked on.
Many were enjoying the music, entertainment, good food, drinks,
and the atmosphere immensely; and they danced the evening away.
As you must have realized about me by now, I am very honest and open; and I have no problem speaking my mind or sharing my honest feelings or thoughts on situations and/or people. Therefore, when ONE is wrong…or done wrong, and I see that wrong, I will let them know. And of course the same goes for when ONE is right. More importantly, I have NO problem giving credit when it is due; and it is certainly due after last week’s successful event.
CONGRATULATIONS to the Caribbean
American Carnival Association of Baltimore “CACAB” –
under the leadership of President Elaine Simon, and DC Caribbean
Carnival, Inc. “DCCC” – under the leadership of President
Roland Barnes, and Executive Director Loughton Sargeant; as well as
their teams who worked extremely hard to make this event possible and
a success. Indeed, they
did their best to make sure our culture is kept alive for 2012.
Personally, I believe in teamwork; so I
am glad to see both organizations worked hand in hand.
I am hopefully that their relationship stays friendly,
respectful, and “in-tact”.
We at Arious Entertainment Group are proud to have been a sponsor of this Baltimore/Washington DC "ONE CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL - 2012"
As I write, I know many from my area
are packing their bags with food and drinks, and boarding the buses
that are heading to Atlantic City – New Jersey Caribbean Carnival.
In fact, I’m sure some buses have already left, and have made
it to the event; as well as those who are heading their in their
own vehicles. I say to
all of you be safe and have lots of fun.
Gosh, Trinidad’s Super Soca Star
Machel Montano will be performing after the parade, at a venue very
near to the festival site; and I know the excitement is building for
everyone. Do enjoy yourselves to the fullest. Hum, it's not too late this Saturday morning yet, so we may
jump in the car and head up there to catch a quick glimpse of all the
festivities and to take a little “wine” and/or jump.
In the upcoming weeks keep your ears open, you eyes focused on, and you mind tuned to the news of all the FUN that will continue throughout this summer here on the East Coast regarding all the different Caribbean Carnivals. I got word that next week is Jersey City, NJ Caribbean Carnival, and of course August is Caribana (Canada), and Norfolk, VA. September is New York (Labor Day); and October is Miami; plus many more within these months.
For those who are in town, don’t
forget the Trinidad and Tobago Embassy annual event “T & T Men Who Can Cook” which is in commemoration of Trinidad and Tobago’s 50
Independence. This special event takes place tonight at the T & T
