Hello On-Line Family and Friends: Hope all is well with you and yours; and life is fantastic in your world.

Wow, it has been a “down” week for me, and one that I wish I could have changed.  But how do one change, or stop from becoming ill (with very little or NO warning signs Great in the morning, then totally knocked down by the afternoon. Hehehe, oh the woes of getting down in age!)

Today I am extremely thankful that I am feeling a little better; I got the strength to be up, and signs of improvement are truly visible.  For those who texted, called, and e-mailed expressing concern.  Thank you …Thank you … Thank you so much … I absolutely appreciate it!  To my colleagues in Philadelphia, Chicago, and here in Washington DC thank you as well.

I am NOT going to “bend your ear” too much this week; but I just had to STOP in to write a little something due to Father’s Day being a few days away.  Of course, I had to share a few words on that; as well as a few events, and one or two other issues with you.  LOL!  After all THIS IS a very special month.

Indeed this special, historical and exciting month of June is moving along at a nice pace. Celebrations upon celebrations are taking place, along with the honoring and commemorating Caribbean-American Heritage, as well as Black Music.  And most importantly THIS SUNDAY it’s all about our FATHERS!  Yup, it’s that special time of year that we stop all we are doing and TAKE THE TIME to honor and celebrate our FATHERS!

One beautiful thing about writing (I find) is: If the writer is unable to deal with thoughts, words or even strength to write at a particular/critical time; they can always go back to something they have written in the past and share it again!  This is a time I MUST!  Therefore, enjoy the words I wrote about Father’s Day a little while ago.   Perhaps it will be extremely meaningful and thought provoking to you; as it HAS TO MANY OTHERS, and even myself [after re-reading.]  HAPPY FATHER’s DAY!!

"It is the Celebration and Honoring of our Fathers, Grandfathers, Step Fathers, Father figures in our lives who are mentors and role models, Mothers who are performing the roles of a Father (either single mothers or even those who are married,) and also our Father-In-Laws.  We absolutely honor and salute all of them!

Fathers are that brave, strong person in our lives who are our protectors, rescuers, and our mentors.  They instill values that will carry us through life.  This powerful man is also our savior…our safety net; the one that teaches us, and shows us the way to becoming successful in our lives, and with our families.  This lovely man we call Father is a courageous disciplinarian…the one who keeps us on a positive pathway through life (“on the straight and narrow”).  And without a doubt he leaves an awesome imprint …an imprint that grids our lives with strength, humility and integrity.

As I ponder on today’s society, it is disheartening that so many of our youths are growing up without that profound “pillar” of a person in their life.  That strong, wise male figure who encourages, guides, teaches and instill positive values; and most importantly take the time to talk with their young ones (their sons and daughters.)  Gosh, those few things I just mentioned are sooooo very important in a child’s life in our society today; because life in this world especially through the early and important years (of a child growing up) is critical and absolutely “no joke”.

After studying my life growing up with my father during my early years; I see there are a few things I have and/or have not experienced.  I would like to encourage/remind the Fathers among my on-line family to follow the few steps I have listed below.  Things that I feel is very important to express to your children (young or old.)

  • look at your child, or each of your children in their eyes and tell them you love them (frequently);
  • make time for them to talk on a regular basis;
  • let them know you are proud of them;
  • give them your blessings;
  • make sure the legacy you leave behind for your children is rich;
  • make sure your virtues are positive and that they shine through brightly to your children
  • look at yourself, and make sure you are the man you would like your son to be; or the man you would like your daughter to marry;
  • make sure that you intentionally and purposefully spend time with your children not only in conversation, but with other things that really matter;
  • encourage them to be all they can be;
  • teach them right from wrong;
  • teach them respect for themselves and others;
  • teach them to be honorable; and
  • show them unconditional LOVE.

With these things in place, the following sad but true statistics can surly be defeated!: (1) difficulties/a risk of low school achievement; (2) low involvement in the labor force; (3) early childbearing, (4) and delinquency.  Most importantly, when it comes to boys without fathers the odds are doubled of being incarcerated, they have problems in the area of psychosocial adjustment, and control of aggression.

As I bring my thoughts to a close on our Fathers I commend the many Moms among our on-line family, specifically the single Moms [who are single by choice or circumstance] for having to play both parenting roles in their children’s lives.  I have seen so many of you juggle, sacrifice and work excessively hard to make your children's lives happy and comfortable. You are doing a fantastic job and God Bless you for being that strong individual...that "Pillar".  To our Grandfathers: HAPPY FATHER'S DAY; To the Step Fathers: HAPPY FATHER'S DAY; and to the Mentors who have stepped into many of our youths lives we also wish you a HAPPY FATHER'S DAY !  Most importantly, to all our DADS among our on-line family we at Arious truly wish all of you a HAPPY FATHER'S DAY...we wish you an awesome day...one filled with lots of love!!!!!

This is the time to tell your dad how much you love and appreciate him on his special day!!!  DO HONOR THY FATHER!  Again, to all our on-line fathers we wish you a very happy Father's Day!!!!

By the way, one extra special event you must attend or take your Fathers to this weekend (if you reside in the District of Columbia (Wash. DC), Maryland or Virginia); or if you plan on visiting this area this Under+Ent+and+Media+Section-F.jpg (87791 bytes)weekend - then you must check out the 24th Annual Caribbeana Comedy Festival.  It takes place this Sunday on Father's Day - June 17, 2012 in Washington DC at Howard University's Cramton Auditorium. It starts at 7:00 pm; and it is sure to be a wonderful event.  Click the following link for all the details; or scroll down to our  "Featured Events" Section. http://www.ariousentertainmentgroup.com/Caribbeana_2012_Comedy_Festival-CCI-17th_June_2012.htm

The Celebration of Caribbean-American Heritage Continues!

I am sure many of you are celebrating Caribbean-American Heritage Month, and will continue.  Remember to share your heritage with others; and show pride in all you do about who you are, and from where you have come.

Thanks to so many of you who e-mailed to let me know that you were happy to hear The Governor of Maryland Martin O'Malley signed the Executive Order creating "The Commission on Caribbean Affairs" here in Maryland last week.  In fact, Maryland is the first state to establish a Commission to handle Caribbean Affairs.  HooRay to Governor Martin O'Malley and Lt. Governor Anthony Brown for seeing the need to: 1) help increase public awareness and education about key issues for the community; (2) increase and expand outreach to engage individuals and organizations in the Caribbean Community; and (3) help form partnerships with State Government in promoting shared cultural and business interests..

I got word from a colleague in New York who indicated that he and his community are trying to initiate a Caribbean Affairs Commission in the State of New York, with the overall goal of other states initiating such a Commission as well.  See his message below, and do what you can to help make this possible.

Caribbean Affairs Commission NYS

June 13, 2012

Caribbean Americans and Friends of Caribbean Americans

The recent initiative which was taken in the State of Maryland; the creation of a Caribbean Affairs Commission by Governor Martin O'Malley (details attached) has prompted a call for a similar creation in NYS and other States.

To those who reside in NYS, kindly add your name and organization to the attached letter to Governor Cuomo or create your own. President Obama should also follow this initiative. Links are listed below.

In the spirit of Marcus Garvey and Bob Marley let us show the love…One Love….One Caribbean. Please share with your social networks.

Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Before I close out for this week.  I want to share with you that the celebration of "Juneteenth" takes place early next week - June 19th.  Please read the below information about the celebration of "Juneteenth".

Tuesday, June 19th, many in America will celebrate "Juneteenth."  [100 hundred and forty-seven years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and 32 years after the event was first recognized with a sanctioned holiday … [June 19, 1865].  "Juneteenth" is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery in America.  It is the date when the last slaves in America were freed.

JUNETEENTH:  June 19th - The National Day of Reconciliation and Healing From The Legacy of Enslavement.  Also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day and Jun-Jun.  Whatever name one calls it, the fact is that it is the oldest African-American Observance in the United States where the African-American History and Heritage is observed; which dates back to 1865.  This observance is one of the most important in American History because it commemorates the freedom...the ending of slavery.  This special day is celebrated across the United States on the 3rd Friday of June and is officially recognized as a state holiday in 39 states of the US.

General Order Number 3: "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer."

On this important day "Juneteenth;" one  must take time to really reflect, study, and learn so that he/she can:

Click the following link for the "Juneteenth" Calendar of Events in the Washington DC area taking place from June 13th-June 19th.  http://www.nationaljuneteenth.com/Calendar.html.

For your information, the history is as follows:

Note: This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.  Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years.  TO CONTINUE READING THE HISTORY AND ALL THE DETAILS ABOUT JUNETEENTH, PLEASE CLICK HERE!
