Hello on-line family and friends!  How are all of you?  Hope all is wonderful in your world.

As you see, I am very late with sharing our Weekly E-Newsletter "The Arious Grapevine" with you; but for a good reason.  My husband Todd Mangatal and I felt it was important to hold things up, so that Todd could finish a project we both felt had to be done.  Yup, due to the loss/s we experienced in the music world last week it absolutely had to be done.  Therefore, this short but sweet E-Newsletter will specifically be focused on expressing our admiration and love for the dearly departed.

Hum, I can’t believe it was only 13 days ago that I stopped and said a silent pray for Mr. Chuck Brown.  But I guess the Lord wanted him to come home!

A few days ago, sadly we lost a legend, a gifted musician, an artist, and a performer; and it leaves many of US feeling a great sense of loss.  Us”, (1) the ones who grew up listening and dancing to the music of the “Godfather of Go Go" Mr. Chuck Brown;  (2) the ones who simply loves, and is very proud of DC’s own “Go Go” music; and (3) the ones who are thankful for all Chuck Brown has done to make sure that this funky percussion driven music was heard by mainstream America; and kept alive here in its home Washington DC.

Yup, it was only a short few weeks ago while checking the newly opened Historic Howard Theatre website for upcoming shows; I came across Chuck Brown’s show, which was scheduled for April 21st at the Historic Theatre.  However, the website noted that his show was postponed until late June (unfortunately at the time, it gave no indication why his show was postponed.)  At that point I was on a quest to find out why…what’s wrong with Chuck?  Regrettably, I soon discovered that he had NOT been able to perform for months, due to becoming ill.  I further learned that he had undergone some type of medical procedure; and was hospitalized suffering from pneumonia.  As you can imagine, from that point on Chuck stayed in my thoughts and prayers!

I realized his condition was extremely serious when someone shared with me that a “Unity Prayer” will take place for Chuck Brown at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, May 10th.  Meaning: everyone should stop what they were doing at 12:00 noon on the 10th of May and say a prayer for Chuck Brown’s health, and for a speedy recovery.  Of course, I stopped (dropped everything I was doing) and said my prayer for our Godfather of Go Go.  And I’m sure many of you did as well!

Wow, with this loss I couldn’t help but reflect on our experiences with Chuck over the years [Todd and I.]  And I find myself smiling because we were among the few lucky ones to see him behind the scenes, and up front on stage! [Yup, during the good ole days at the Crossroads Night Club in Maryland where the late Trinidadian born Promoter Roy Benn had Chuck performing on a weekly basis.]  Needless-to-say, what a master Chuck was on; and off stage!  Full of life, completely in love with his music, and an excellent performer who was full of energy; just living up to the true meaning of his “Go Go” music [where at every concert/performance he kept going … performing … going … performing and go ... go … going.]  I must say his performances were [as they say in DC] “bumping,” and Chuck always knew how to “wind us up.”  One important fact I must mention about Chuck was: he was completely devoted to “Go Go” music; and was extremely dedicated to making sure his/this music MADE IT to mainstream America.

Todd is feeling this loss more than I could have imagined.  As he explained to me: “Chuck gave birth, and hope to our local home grown musicit is the music I grew up on and love.  He further stated to me: “Now I fully understand what you feel when you hear Soca music; that joy, love, warmness, happiness, and pride is what I feel when I hear Go Go music.”  That statement is all I needed to help me understand the strong loss he has been feeling.

This talented Grammy nominated guitarist, songwriter, and singer had a lot of charisma; and had a good soul.  He loved life and loved performing.  [I chuckle because a memory from “back in the day” just flashed across my mind…hehehe…how much Chuck loved his drinks (like so many of us…right? [LOL, our Colleague/Management at the Crossroads confirmed that he loved drinking Southern Comfort then...LOL.])  Seriously though, Chuck loved the community, and truly did a lot FOR the community.  Undoubtedly, he was an inspiration to many local musicians; and they absolutely loved, respected and appreciated him!

As a matter of fact, all of the Metropolitan Washington DC Community loved Chuck, and forever will.  Especially for creating such a unique DC sound “Go Go;” introducing it, nurturing it, defining it, and being passionate about exposing it.  Moreover, for making history with their beloved "Go Go" music!  Yes…yes…yes, we will forever love Chuck’s music, and for him being so diverse with his music.

With this being said; I must mention how much I appreciate, embrace and love the jazz and blues music he has done as well.  Ohhhh, the stuff he has done with Eva Cassidy is awesome!!!   Indeed, he was an extremely diverse musician, and a lovely man who will be loved forever, and missed dearly (especially in these here parts.)

Being so much in love with music on a whole; knowing the industry so well; watching attentively the growth of "Go Go" music; and understanding the strong desire Chuck had for wanting to take Go Go Music mainstream; Todd decided to pull together a tribute to Chuck Brown.  See the reasons for his motivation below and the video tribute.

"My Tribute To Chuck Brown:  My motivation for creating this video is: first and foremost to express what a great loss it is that Chuck is gone. Additionally, I find folks must be aware of how important he was in creating the sound of DC "Go Go," why he was called the "Godfather of Go Go," and how he opened doors to take "Go Go" International."

We love you Chuck, and we are thankful that you put DC on the map with the funky, percussion driven music called "Go Go."  Indeed, your music will live on!!!

Our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and fans!  May the lovely memories you hold dear for Chuck Brown comfort you in this time of grief, and always!

Another legend who was a true STAR and the master of her game died this week as well from a battle with lung cancer!  Of course I’m referring to the beautiful and excellent Queen of Disco DONNA SUMMER.  And boy was she an ICON!

This extremely talented singer/songwriter truly helped define a music genre that rose to prominence in the 70’s.  This disco diva released HIT after HIT, and received Grammy after Grammy.  Truly, this successful woman...artist...author...painter was unstoppable and kept us entertained with her wonderful voice, and lovely disco music.

Do you remember as I do; singing along and dancing to her hits? “Hot Stuff;” “Love to Love You Baby;” “She Works Hard For The Money;” "Bad Girls;" "I Feel Love;" "Last Dance;" and “McArthur Park”  [to name a few].   I even remember the duet she did with Barbara Streisand “No More Tears (Enough is Enough).  Most importantly, I remember the hit song she did with British Reggae Sensations "Musical Youth;" I recall so clearly always singing along to the chorus of their "Unconditional Love" [It was truly funny to hear her sing with a slight accent.]

Give me your unconditional love.  The kind of love I deserve.  The kind I want to return.  Give me your Unconditional love! My torn heart to discern. This agape love to learn.

What a legend LaDonna Adrian Gaines is!  She was the first female artist to top the charts with back-to-back multi-platinum double albums [a total of three]. Winning 4 Grammy Awards, and Six American Music Awards.  AWESOME!

What an amazing legacy she has left behind.  She is survived by her husband – Songwriter Bruce Sudano; who she has been married to for 31 years, and with whom she had 2 children.  Additionally, she is survived by her first child, from a previous marriage.

We also send our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Donna Summer.

So true...is the famous saying "they die in 3's".  Wow, how weird is it that we lost another legend a few days ago?  And what's even weirder: all 3 legends that passed were on top of their game in the 70's.  They were super hot!

Mr. ROBIN GIBB ~~~ singer, songwriter, producer, and one of the 3 singing brothers of the famous family group "Bee Gees," passed away from a long battle with cancer a few days ago.

Of course, as a little girl in the 70's I was in love with all the Bee_Gees-1.jpg (55201 bytes)Bee Gee's music.  And as I write and reflect; many of their songs are coming to the surface of my mind. "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart;" (awesome lyrics)" "To Love Somebody;" and ohhhh "How Deep Is Your Love"; "Too Much Heaven;" and "Nights on Broadway."  I must mention their super popular songs "You Should Be Dancing"; "Night Fever" and "Staying Alive;" which were all hits from the movie "Saturday Night Fever"... {The movie that  jolted John Travolta's career; and assisted him in reaching the top.}  I am only touching the surface with the hit songs I mentioned above; but they had many!

Oh yes, I am smiling broadly because of the lovely memories these Grammy winning songs bring!

Many of us absolutely appreciate the lovely music that Robin and his brothers wrote, produced and sang; and he will truly be missed. Condolences to his family, friends and fans; this is truly a great loss.
