I do hope your week went well; and I imagine you are enjoying this charming spring season, as much as I am! Also, I hope you and your family are fine.
I was a bit overwhelmed by your responses [pleasantly though] from our last week’s E-Newsletter. And I can honestly say I am inspired by many of your thought provoking comments! Thanks to so many of you for taking the time to respond, and for sharing your great insights and concerns on the topic of DC Caribbean Carnival. Indeed, your thoughts; suggestions; and recommendations; are highly appreciated. Wow…Wow…and Wow…Again, thank you all!
Hum, this is the perfect time to let you know that interacting with you is a great joy, and I am so thankful for this vehicle (our Arious Grapevine Weekly E-Newsletter;) which keeps me closer to you, and keeps me learning and improving. Undeniably, it affords me the wonderful opportunity to hear you ALWAYS; and pushes me to get better, and allows me to become wiser.
Admittedly, I wasn’t very optimistic about sharing the information about the Carnival; but due to the many who felt it was important to seek my opinion, and since it was reported by so many local media outlets: I figured “why not?” In truth, we do have a tight connection with the community, and we interact with them/you on a weekly basis; therefore, it would be an injustice NOT to share this important information. After all you must be afforded the opportunity to share your thoughts on this disturbing situation…[a situation that affects our community, and for many of us a small part of our lives.]
In all honesty, many aspects of this situation does bother me; but I have asked myself over and over again why let this callousness and stupidity affect me. Being honest, proactive, with less of a “welfare mentality;” as well as a “know it all attitude” would have helped matters out tremendously. Additionally, learning to listen, being inclusive, trusting, and transparent are very important as well. Alright, I’m DONE, enough said! I must however let you know the drama continues!!!
Backing up for a bit, and seriously looking at your responses; we are glad to know that so many of you thought the Baltimore and Washington DC Carnival Union would be a good one; and quite a bit of you said you have suggested this to individual members of the Organizing Committee in the past; but you adamantly felt via their responses it will never happen. In conclusion though, overwhelmingly many stated it was a terrific idea.
it stands now, we have gotten NO solid word on the Carnival
taking place in Washington DC. And
the momentum no longer seems to be high. Many are questioning why the effort to save this event was
discontinued directly after the 2011 Carnival (especially since the
Carnival was in jeopardy, and was experiencing problems in 2011).
Quite a few bandleaders have also indicated that it is clear
the Organizers of the event are passing the blame.
Specifically, since it has constantly been repeated that
support has been minimal from the community; including the bandleaders
and their participants. I
get a strong sense that they are correct; due to reading and hearing
statements to that effect – [regarding the community giving very
little support (clearly monetarily.)]
As I’m writing a humbling and wonderful situation involving us "Arious Entertainment Group" crossed my mind; which I must share with you. Hum, many of you may have seen me post on “Facebook” last weekend as we were surprisingly presented with an award. And, I can’t say enough how astonished we were! You see, we were invited to the Trinidad and Tobago Working Women’s Committee “Caribbean Student Scholarship Award Banquet” under the pretense of presenting an award to 1 of the 6 scholarship recipients.
to the event we found it pretty odd that none of the Committee members
shared with us, which recipient we would be presenting the award to.
It was even more peculiar that during the ceremony we noticed
the award certificates were dwindling down and no one gave us any
indication that we needed to be ready to present the award.
But we went along with the program, enjoyed the great food;
absorbed the wonderful and fascinating words of the Keynote Speaker
Novella Smith (a previous scholarship recipient); as well as enjoyed a lovely poem from talented and entertaining Poet Hollis
Lashley. Additionally, we listened keenly to the Committee
members address the audience; as well as the host WHUR Radio
Personality John Blake.
the time rolled around to “wrap” up the program; and as the final
remarks were being made [so we thought]; we heard one of the
committee members (the chairperson in particular) stated something
along the following line: “we are at the portion of our program
where we honor and show our appreciation to folks in our community who
have made great contributions”…etc.
Then she began saying some words that sound very familiar, in
fact shockingly it sound like she was talking about our life (my
husband Todd and I.) Things
I have never heard out loud before; such as: the year I came to this
country…me beginning high school …me meeting this young man (she
stated an American young man, whose father was from Martinique; who
recently discovered he has family in Trinidad; and who believes he is
an honorary Jamaican.)…LOL!
WoW, she continued talking about us meeting in high school;
getting married; moving to California to get a start on our new life;
returned home for a short time, where plans for opening a business
came together ~~~ which resulted in the opening of a Dry Cleaning
establishment in Florida. Still
she continued talking about our life, indicating that our Dry Cleaning
business was successful for a number of years; however we had decided
to return home to Maryland/Washington DC to focus on opening and
building Arious Entertainment. She
even mentioned we have been together for 33 years and have been
married for 27 years.
my goodness” were the words that was going through my mind as I
heard her speak those true words about our life.
I couldn’t help but laugh when Todd whispered to me “is
she talking about me/us?” And my response was: "welllll…who
else feels he is an honorary Jamaican?”
Indeed, it was a surprise; and those true and charming words
were tremendously heartfelt. Although, we both were surprised, Todd was totally
flabbergasted; to the point that he became speechless.
So much so that amazingly he forgot our website address.
LOL …Todd speechless?
Nah, this is a man who is a great public speaker; and one who
easily find words to express his thoughts, feelings, and knowledge of
every situation. Hum,
give him a microphone and the words naturally enters his head, and
would exquisitely flow out his mouth - with great ease.
HaHaHaHa, oh yeah, they “got us” this time ~~~ let it be noted: the Trinidad and Tobago Working Women’s Committee “got us!” Although, we have accumulated a nice amount of awards and plaques throughout the years; this one will be the most memorable due to HOW it was presented. We are truly grateful for the honor and respect we received this past weekend from the hard working members of this awesome Committee, and with grace and pride we wholeheartedly accept and appreciate this award.
Please consider supporting the efforts of the Trinidad and Tobago Working Women's Committee as they continue to build on the "movement of individuals who understand the importance of higher education and the financial difficulties and challenges that Caribbean students and families face."
Do consider contributing generously to the Caribbean Students Scholarship Fund - to ensure the education and resources for our young Caribbean Adults. To learn more about the Committee, the supporters, the 2012 recipients, the fund and more go ahead and CLICK HERE to view the 2012 Program.
I find myself wondering if I am living in a parallel Universe…or
what? Because things taking place in this universe are
truly weird. What we know is wrong, somehow often turns out to be right.
It is extremely difficult for me to understand and accept that
a cold-blooded murderer is granted bail in the small amount of
$150,000.00 (10% to be paid to the bails bond company - a total of
$15,000.) This killer
is then allowed to address the family of the unarmed teen he accosted
and killed (an apology they call it).
And needless to say his so-called apology was an insincere,
heartless, “half ass” statement---with, no remorse
whatsoever for taking an innocent unarmed teen’s life (so
he profiled this teen - Trayvon Martin; came to the conclusion
in his mind this teen was a criminal; and took the law in his hands (after
being instructed by authorities not to follow, confront, approach)
and proceeded with killing this unarmed teen; claiming it was in self
defense. Remember, he was the aggressor; the attacker; and the
murderer; so does this seem right to you, or am I simply losing my
I can’t believe this murderer - Zimmerman will be released from jail, and will be placed under house arrest. This is so NOT logical to me at all! I am in awe over this small amount of bail set down for this killer, and in this day~~~in my life I am experiencing a killer being released and placed under house arrest. Again, a man kills someone, and gets to spend his time (under arrested) in his home with all the luxuries. Never, have I heard this…it is appalling!
disturbing is: today, a bogus picture has been released to the media
showing Zimmerman with a bloody head.
Of course…I am not surprised; are you?
Oh yeah, I feel strongly…deep in my soul that this man WILL walk away from this murder case a free man…he will be found NOT guilty, and will serve NO time in jail. Yup, all of this arresting, bail, etc. is just a charade. The justice system WILL fail Trayvon Martin, and many young men like him…I just feel it. What are you thoughts? email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON MARTIN!
guess the only way to cope with the unexplained madness/weirdness
taking place in this universe, is for EVERY day to be 420 Day…right?
420 Day – an extraordinary...special day that is celebrated
around the globe by those who enjoy and believe in the smoking of
“green herb," and who are strongly for it to be legalized.
My intent is not to offend you by writing about this, but to
educate. In fact, we must be “real”
about the sensitive issue of legalizing Cannabis (for medical purposes
[at this time]…of course!)
April 20th every year since the early 70s “420 Day” have been celebrated and declared unofficially a Cannabis Holiday. Yup, it’s an informal sub-culture holiday in honor of what in my world folks call “Green Herb Day”; and what others call “National Smoke Day”, "Weed Day", along with quite a few other names. A day based on the simple concept of smoking cannabis and being happy. While others believe it would be disastrous if Cannabis is legalized, others strongly feel it’s the "HEALING OF THE NATION.
Throughout time there have been a strong movement to end marijuana prohibition, and folks have been ferociously fighting for the Green Herb to be legalized. In recent years it has had subsequent success in many states across America, and in 2010 there was a policy shift by the Obama administration; which openly called for the limitation of prosecuting sick people who use the drug for medical purposes, or to the caregivers that dispense it in states that have passed medical marijuana legislation.
There have been a tremendous amount of activity in the marijuana arena, resulting in many states currently regulating medical marijuana. However, the ferocious debate regarding the legalization of cannabis continues. I guess only the lovers of “Green Herb” can get involved in changing the Government interferences that prohibits the use and consumption [for medical purposes and spiritual benefits.]
[The picture located on the right is what a photographer captured of the Cannabis celebration that took place a day ago (April 20, 2012) in Denver, CO; where thousands of people attended and participated in the “Smoke Out” celebrations in that state, [with very little problems and arrests.]
In one of the states that legalized Cannabis for medical purposes (California) the State Director for the Drug Policy Alliances - Mr. Stephen Gutwllig stated the following some time ago:
"Marijuana already plays a huge role in the California economy. It's a revenue opportunity we literally can't afford to ignore any longer." He further stated "It's time to end the charade of marijuana prohibition, tax the $14 billion market, and redirect criminal justice resources to matters of real public safety…"

Sunday - April 22nd, we observe and celebrate “EARTH
“EARTH DAY” is the celebration of Earth’s unique place in the university…a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment, and a time for many around the world to become educated about the important environmental issues facing our plant. Plus assess the work that still needs to be completed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. Further, it’s a time to celebrate gains we have made, and create new vision to accelerate environmental progress.
On this unique day families will come together; as well as adults of all ages, civic leaders, entertainers and other community members around the globe to share a common commitment to make greener life choices and stem the tide of climate change. And most importantly, to show their support for responsible/brave environmental policies!
41 years after the first Earth Day, it has been reported; in fact it is obvious the world is in greater peril…more than every before. While climate change is the greatest challenge of our time, it also presents the greatest opportunity – an unprecedented opportunity to build a healthy, prosperous, clean energy economy NOW AND FOR THE FUTURE. Many believe Earth Day this year (2011) can be a turning point to advance more uses of natural gas and other forms of clean energy, energy efficiency, renewable energy, climate policy, and green jobs.
Happy Earth Day! Keep in mind protecting the Earth is every person’s and every country’s responsibility; and we all must be accountable for what we use, and how we use it! We absolutely hope your Earth Day is GREEN.

I also must mention that at the beginning of this week on April 16th - many around the country observed the 5th anniversary of the deadliest mass shooting that occurred in U.S. History. This sad and tragic shooting took place approximately a hundred miles away from the Nations Capital on the Campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University College in Blacksburg, Virginia aka "The Virginia Tech Massacre". This deadly mass shooting committed by a single gunman - a student "Seung-Hui Cho" was extremely devastating and heartbreaking for many. This mad gunman---mass murderer went on a killing rampage and gunned down 47 people; killing 32 and wounding 15 (majority were students, plus he took the life of some faculty members and staff.) After killing and wounding so many this gunman took his own life.
Even though the actual date of this sad day has passed, we at Arious expresses our heartfelt sympathy, prayers, and condolences to the family and friends of these 32 lives that were lost on this sad day. We are sure many of you are still experiencing unbearable heartache due to the lost of your loved one, and always will; but hold on to the memories you hold near and dear. To the 15 who were injured, many of you may have already healed physically, but we pray that you are healed mentally as well. Obviously, this is something you will never forget; and will forever keep asking WHY??? Look to the future though, and give praises that you survived this horrible ordeal. Blessings to all of you!!!
