Dearest Online Family and Friends: I trust all of you are fine and everything in your life is fantastic. 2011 Taxes Due Already?
NO, that dreaded income tax filing time is upon us once again!
Hum, but wait…what am I reading?…THE FILING DEADLINE IS
NOT APRIL 15th? OMG...what?...An
extension? WOW, 3 more days
before it must be filed? WOOHOO!!!
sources are indicating that the tax filing deadline date this year is April 18th.
Meaning, your taxes must be postmarked or electronically filed by
midnight on Monday, April 18th.
Personally, I absolutely needed these few days because I have
truly been procrastinating; and if it was due on the 15th (as
it usually is,) I
certainly would have been late.
One would think after all these years living in this country I
would get used to this hateful time, but I AM NOT!!! LOL!!!
may be asking why not on April 15th (as it has always been?)
Well, it seems the “Emancipation Day” Holiday [The
celebration of the liberation of African Slaves;] that is celebrated
in Washington DC and other states is normally observed on April 16th
(which falls on Saturday this year.)
However, the law states when the holiday falls on a Saturday or
Sunday (weekend) it is observed on the Friday preceding the
(also by law) the due date for the filing of your Tax returns
cannot (legally) fall on a weekend (either Saturday or Sunday,
nor on a holiday.) Hence,
the moving forward of the Income tax deadline to the next business day
– making the deadline date for this year:
Monday, April 18th, 2011.
am pleased to have these additional 3 days, and I hope you are too.
But for those of you who are like me (quite frequently being
late with everything,) “get to cracking” on preparing you
income tax return and PLEASE FILE THEM ON TIME!
LOL, I intend to heed my own words!!!
Emancipation Day Observed-2011 + April 16th-The Importance
Day" - The day the 16th President of the United States Abraham
Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act in the year 1862.
The Act was for “the release of certain persons held
to service or labor in the District of Columbia.”
Approximately 3,000 slaves in the District of Columbia was freed;
making DC residents the “first freed” by the Federal
Government nine months before President Lincoln issued the
“Emancipation Proclamation” – freeing the slaves in the
2005, "Emancipation Day" was made an official public
holiday in the District of Columbia.
On this holiday many celebrate by producing and attending a
variety of functions which are aimed to educate a broad spectrum of
people about the history; particularly the history of “slavery.” Additionally, the African origin of the slaves and racial
issues in modern American society is closely examined. Other activities and events many attend are: laying of
wreaths, public discussions, exhibitions, parades, the presentation of
historic documents, and even concerts and poetry readings.

Observe Emancipation Day
Just a few weeks ago I wrote about the anniversary of the unfortunate assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and asked that we light a candle in commemoration of that sad day. During Dr. King’s fight for equality and justice numerous incidents and events took place, which was extremely serious and heart wrenching. Many of these critical incidents/events have changed the world in some form or another; and most importantly, have proceeded to becoming historic. 48 years ago in the year 1963, also on April 16th, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his famous Birmingham Letter.
wrote this letter from a Birmingham
(Alabama) jail, after being arrested along with fifty-three blacks for
marching into downtown Birmingham to protest the existing segregation
laws. Dr. King’s letter
was a response to eight Clergyman from Alabama who made statements
regarding Dr. King’s activities; which stated his activities were “unwise
and untimely”. I
have added below this historic/famous letter.
Please note this document/letter has become one of the
fundamental arguments in the Civil Rights Movement.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Letter From Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963
MY DEAR FELLOW CLERGYMEN:
While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas. If I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk, my secretaries would have little time for anything other than such correspondence in the course of the day, and I would have no time for constructive work. But since I feel that you are men of genuine good will and that your criticisms are sincerely set forth, I want to try to answer your statements in what I hope will be patient and reasonable terms.
I think I should indicate why I am here In Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against "outsiders coming in." I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. We have some eighty-five affiliated organizations across the South, and one of them is the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. Frequently we share staff, educational and financial resources with our affiliates. Several months ago the affiliate here in Birmingham asked us to be on call to engage in a nonviolent direct-action program if such were deemed necessary. We readily consented, and when the hour came we lived up to our promise. So I, along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here I am here because I have organizational ties here.
But more basically, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their villages and carried their "thus saith the Lord" far beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco-Roman world, so am I. compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid.

Four years ago on April 16th, (2007) the deadliest mass shooting that occurred in U.S. History took place on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University College in Blacksburg, Virginia. In fact “The Virginia Tech Massacre” is one of the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history, on or off a school campus.
23 year old mentally ill student – Seung-Hui Cho (born in Seoul, South Korea;) went on a killing rampage and selfishly gunned down 47 people. 32 were killed and 15 were wounded (the majority were students, plus faculty and staff.) Cho took his own life after the massacre.
I remember this day like it was just yesterday. A cold blustery snowy day (on and off flurries falling); just full of sorrow and heartache! So many of us in America were trying to attain understanding of why these 32 lives were taken away selfishly and so cruelly; and why was the signs that Mr. Cho MUST HAVE exhibited missed.
this 4th Anniversary Virginia
Tech dedicates "April 16 Day of Remembrance" to community service.
The school has asked students to perform 32 hours of volunteer
work in memory of the victims. This
they believe will strengthened the students' sense of community and their
commitment to the university. Most
importantly, they feel pledging 32 hours of service will make students
mindful all year of those who were lost.
Our heartfelt sympathy, prayers, and condolences go out to the family and friends of these 32 lives that were lost on this sad day. I’m sure many of you are still experiencing unbearable heartache due to the lost of your loved one, and always will; but hold on to the memories you hold near and dear. To the 15 who were injured, many of you may have already healed physically, but we pray that you are healed mentally as well. Obviously, this is something you will never forget; and will forever keep asking WHY??? Look to the future though, and give praises that you survived this horrible ordeal. Blessings to all of you!!!
On March 29, 2011, the Department of Education fined Virginia Tech
$55,000 for "failing to warn the Blacksburg, Va., campus
quickly" after the first two students (Hilscher and Clark) were
shot and killed. The fines are a result of the Clery Act, named after
murdered Lehigh University student Jeanne

DIALOGUE WORTH NOTING, REMARKS, REMINDERS, ETC.
As you see from my writings above, April 16th has been greatly significant throughout history. I must point out though some events were sad, and others including the sad impacted our history to a great extent. I hope what I have shared with you above is of some interesting to you.
Now, let me fast forward to current issue/s that has transpired this week.
Yes...yes...yes, I know I have been talking quite a bit about the Nuclear Radiation problem in Japan (stemming from the nuclear reactors exploding due to the Earthquake/s and Tsunami.) But did you hear that the Japanese Government's Nuclear Safety Agency raised the radiation crisis level from 5 to 7 (the worst on the International scale). [Apparently, Level 7 has [formerly] only been applied to the Chernobyl accident in the former Soviet Union in 1986. However, keep in mind though; the volume of radiation released from the nuclear plant in Japan is one-tenth that of Chernobyle.) The government is also asking folks to stop eating leafy vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, parsley and most recently Shiitake mushroom. Radioactivity has also been detected above the legal limit in some fish. Yes indeed, fear has risen greatly regarding contaminated food and drink.
I also learned the radiation level has risen at the Fukushima Power Plant; it now measures approximately 400 mSv [radiation is measured in units called Sieverts (mSv), which is 160x higher than the average dosage typically a person receives in one year.] "The average dosage a person receives in one year is 3 mSv, the same levels as in a CT scan." See the chart below to learn about the effects of radiation exposure. This is absolutely serious folks, and one that must be watched closely.
Finally, I learned 13,000 are reported dead, over 15,000 missing and over 150,000 thousands living in evacuation shelters. Still the Japanese Self-Defense Force, the Unites States Military, and various other International support agencies are working tirelessly to continue its daunting search and rescue operations, and aid operations.
I oftentimes wonder why this important issue is overlooked by the media, and even by our government officials.
Anyway, lets keep them in our thoughts and prayers, as well as the people of Japan.

I am still musing over that silly Government Shutdown THREAT; what a fiasco...right? And here we go again...the fighting still continues among the people we elected to represent us. Personally, these law makers we placed in office to work for us, are becoming awfully ineffective and insignificant. And I've become so disoriented with politics on a whole. I must admit though, politics is interesting; but the elected officials are extremely "crappy" and worthless.
As I close, do remember this "lent" season is a time for introspection, self examination, and repentance. Many of you are fasting and working on giving up something or another; either meat, alcohol, smoking, partying, sweets and many other types of food and habits. And some of you are simply repenting for failures and sins. I however believe you must work on your inner self...cleanse your heart, soul, and mind. Acknowledge your failures; re-evaluate and focus on a way to re-approach what you have failed upon. In fact, do all you can to make it successful! Perhaps, you may need to discard that particular goal or plan; but this is the time for you to make that determination.
Additionally, it's a time to cleanse your surroundings. Like me, I have placed great emphasis on giving quite a bit more to charities. I sometimes don't realized I have so much, and I find it hard to tear myself away from things I have carefully laid aside for my family in Trinidad. However, I have finally realized all that I have been keeping for my family (because I know they need them) is only making me become more and more clutter filled. I have decided (for now) to just give them away; to folks that really need them NOW. I've figured: so what...I can always buy more for the people who mean so much to me.
Wow, just opening up and being a little more free with life is very important (especially at my age;) and the freeness I feel in my mind, soul and overall is awesome. The changes I have made in these past few month have baffled me, but they are extremely good changes; and I know tremendous success is forthcoming .
