Hello.jpg (14424 bytes)Dearest On-line Family and Friends: What a wonderful week it has been, and I hope it has been great for you and your family as well.

Valentine’s Day is a few days away, and I’m certain you have made plans regarding exactly HOW you will be celebrating your Sweetheart and special love/s in your life.  I say “love/s” because in recent times the Valentines celebrations and expressions of love and affection NOW encompasses everyone; and not only a lover or romantic couple.  [The gift and card giving now includes friends, parents, children, Teachers or just about anyone who is very dear.]

This important time is set aside each year on February 14th to cherish our sweethearts; and shower them with sentiments of love, affection and appreciation.  Of course, this can be expressed by: (1) an enduring and sincere symbol of your love; or simply by (2) creating a timeless experience that will produce a lifetime of memories.  Which ever way you celebrate the goal is to openly show your love and appreciation, which includes sharing and reflecting, giving from your heart and truly meaning it, and most importantly using the words “I love you” in a genuinely meaningful way.

I have stated in the past via this weekly E-newsletter; that my husband Todd and I strongly feel the emotional symbolism of Valentine’s Day [love, honor, appreciation, and respect] should NOT be expressed ONLY on February 14th, but EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE YEAR (all 365 days.)  Honoring those we love should just come naturally, and even without gifts; but with simple profound…meaningful expressions such as: a word, a touch, or even a kind gesture.

The following poem written by someone who calls herself/himself “Angel Watching,” further describes and nicely elaborates our feelings about Valentine’s day, and somewhat expresses our way of life which I mentioned above.  The Poem is entitled: “It’s More Than Saying I Love You.”  Have a wonderful time with your Love...Sweetheart...Special Someone...Significant Other this 2012 Valentine's Day.

"It's More Than Saying I Love You"

We give on this day candy and flowers,
But we never stop to say thank you for the many hours.

You have stood by my side and gave a smile,
As if to tell our hearts it's been worth every mile.
No need to buy a teddy bear or even a card,
It's pretty simple and not at all hard.

Just put your arms around me and hold me tight,
And say without words that in your heart all is right.
You may say I Love You throughout the year,
But on this day you feel the need to make sure.

The words so sweet and straight from your heart,
That your life would be lonely without my part.
So put forth the effort and take the time,
Look me in the eye and say I'm glad you're mine.

As I continue celebrating the achievements of African Americans; and acknowledging their valued contributions to the cultural, economical and political growth of our nation.  And further, as I focus specifically on this years’ Black History Month Theme: “Black Women In American: Culture and History;” [appropriately] there is ONLY 1 (one) person who I deeply feel should be highlighted this “Valentine’s Day” weekend.  This fantastic woman with her powerful words have made astounding contributions and have impacted society, as well as made history with her lovely, profound, meaningful poems.  Yes, I am referring to the Great Poet Dr. Maya Angelou “The Global Renaissance Woman”.

Not only is Dr. Maya Angelou an outstanding and distinguished Poet; she is also a Civil Rights Activist, a Novelist, Dramatist, Memoirist, Composer, Producer, Actress, Singer, Dancer, Teacher, Lecturer, Historian, and Filmmaker.  Her interesting life is one that many of us can only dream of.  Being afforded the opportunity to travel, live and work in historical, notable countries [Egypt and Ghana;] where she was able to physically touch, visually see “from where we have come,” and clearly walk the steps of our ancestors; IS TRULY SIGNIFICANT!

Dr. Angelou has worked with some of our great civil rights leaders.  In fact, the most notable leader - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., requested/appointed her to serve as Northern Coordinator of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.  She has successfully mastered several different languages; and she has been invited by US Presidents to serve in various capacities: [1) Appointed by President Gerald Ford to the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, 2) Invited by President Carter to serve on The Presidential Commission for the International Year of the Woman, and 3) Requested by President Clinton to compose a poem to read at his inauguration in 1993. That Poem is entitled: “On The Pulse Of The Morning”.]

And the list goes on with this brilliant and powerful woman: Her published works includes more than 30 titles beginning back in 1971 with “Just Give Me A Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die”; and some years ago wrote and published “Letter to My Daughter” – a book of guidance for young women.  She also received some high honors and awards: (1) In 2000 she was honored with the Presidential Medal of The Arts; (2) In 2008 she received the Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal; (3) she received 3 Grammy Awards; and (4) most recently in 2011 President Barack Obama awarded her the Nation’s highest Civilian Honor – “The Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

[A stunning photo of President Obama kissing Dr. Maya Angelou after awarding her the "Presidential Medal of Freedom."  Note: Look at the pride on her face!  Most importantly, look what she has lived to see...experience: (1) The First African-American President; and (2) being awarded the Nation's highest Civilian Honor by this African-American President - Barack Obama.]

I commend this magnificent Poet, Woman, Mother - Dr. Maya Angelou for her accomplishments; her contributions and on how much she has impacted society.  To learn more about Dr. Angelou log on to her site by CLICKING HERE.  Appropriately, I close my thoughts on this lovely woman with a poem of love, perfectly suited for VALENTINE'S DAY!!

"Touched By An Angel"
by Maya Angelou

We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.

Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.

We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

A couple of days ago - on February 6th people around the world celebrated the birthday of the late...great Legendary Reggae Artist Robert Nesta Marley "The King of Reggae".  Honestly, there is not a whole lot more I can share with you about this legend that you already don't know.  But I just want you to honor his legacy, and share the history of what he accomplished on his short time on earth through his music.  Especially what he has accomplished for his music REGGAE, and his country of birth JAMAICA.  Had he been alive, this year he would have turned 67 years old.

Indeed, Bob Marley’s music is timeless and has crossed many boundaries.  His words are prophetic; and in these worrisome/troubling and difficult times we are undergoing in this world currently ~ with the economy issues, wars, and even the drastic rise in crimes; this is the type of music we need to guide and uplift us.

Reflecting on Bob's music it seems the words/lyrics of his songs had to have come from a higher place...a higher power, because they are extremely “deep” and meaningful.  In fact, reggae music on a whole has the power to uplift and unify the world.

Born Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley - (February 6, 1945-May 11, 1981) Reggae Singer, Composer, and Guitarist was born in Nine Miles, Jamaica, and grew up in Kingston's rough Trenchtown District.  His first group, "The Rudeboys", later became known as the Wailers.  In 1964, they released their first hit "Simmer Down", which was written in response to gang violence.  In 1972, the Wailers were signed by Island Records, and Bob Marley began to gain a worldwide following, especially in Africa.

His songs spoke of strength through unity and human rights, crime, revolution, and Rastafarianism.  In 1976, 7 men broke into his home in an assassination attempt, the night before he was to sing at a concert supporting Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley.  Unfortunately, he was wounded in his arm, but nevertheless he appeared at the concert.  2 years later he gave a historical concert emphasizing political conciliation, with the song "One Love."  In 1980, he gave another historic performance celebrating independence in Zimbabwe.  Bob Died of Cancer at age 36, but his spirit is not dead, and his songs are still alive in our hearts today.

Additionally, one of my favorite Artist The Crown Prince of Reggae Mr. Dennis Brown was born a few days before Mr. Marley; but 12 years later.  People around the world celebrated his birthday as well.

Reggae Superstar Dennis Emmanuel Brown ("Dennis"), was  born on DennisBrown.jpg (10394 bytes)February 1st, 1957.  Dennis was fondly known as "The Crown Prince of Reggae,"  and he was one of Jamaica's exceptional singers/songwriter.  Dennis with his sweet, melodic, extremely powerful tenor and distinctive singing voice, established himself easily as one of the most impressive reggae artist of the 20th century.  Dennis has recorded more than 100 records, including over 50 albums (from the time he was in his teens.).  Dennis passed away on July 1, 1999.

We celebrate Dennis Emmanuel Brown as well!!!.  Click here to read more about Dennis Brown ~~~ The Crown Prince of Reggae.

Earlier this week, we lost a dear member of our community.  DJ Brian (BRIAN L. FRANCOIS), a very nice gentleman and accomplished DJ, who primarily rendered his services to the Caribbean Community.  My personal experience and relationship with DJ Brian was very good.  He always tried  to help and support much of the organizations and events in the Caribbean Community.  I fondly recall asking him on several occasion to support certain events or associations I was involved in; and he graciously did so for just a hand shake, or a word of Thanks.  FOR WHICH I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN GRATEFUL TO HIM FOR...HIS KINDNESS.  I can strongly say, he supported many organizations and people in the Trinidad and Tobago Community here in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia.  We will miss DJ Brian, but we know he is at peace and is without pain.  Our sincerest condolences are being extended to his family and friends.  "We pray that the beautiful memories you hold dear will help ease the pain you are currently enduring for your beloved Brian." For details CLICK HERE! The details regarding his funereal is as follows:

In closing I want to THANK quite a few of you for joining our social network www.MyCaribbean.us.

It's truly a fantastic network, very much like the popular "Facebook" but geared to folks who are Caribbean, and to those who love everything Caribbean.  We hope you log on frequently, and participate in the discussions, chat, post your events; share your photos, videos, music, etc.  Most importantly, we hope you WILL share this site with you friends and family members.  Please let them know that it's pretty cool; and they should log on and join.  I felt it was very important to share Todd's Special Message about www.MyCaribbean.us  once again.  See below!

Todd Mangatal

We  have been working on a lot of exciting things here at Arious Entertainment Group and we have lots of electrifying things planned for the future.  For the last 9 years we have been communication with all of you through our weekly E-Newsletters "The Arious Grapevine', and for us it has been extremely delightful having a forum to express our thoughts and opinions on various issues and events happening in and around our community today.  Most importantly, it's wonderful to be able to share it all by just one click of a button.  Obviously, what I have been saying for years about this internet is true, "the internet is the new frontier", because each and every day new doors of communications are opening!

The latest breakthrough of communication is the social network.  Social networks have become one of the most popular forms of communication, and they have changed the way we communicate in a very short time.  Social networks have only become extremely popular in the last few years, and they have become essential for business and pleasure.  I'm sure many of you are members of some of the more popular social networks such as: "Facebook", "Twitter", "Linkedin", and "MySpace", etc.  A lot of people say they are addicted to their social networks and I agree.  One can certainly become addicted, but they can also be a great tool.

After dealing with "Facebook", "Twitter", "Linkedin", and "MySpace"; which are large communities filled with a broad range of people from all walks of life.  We thought a targeted network for the Caribbean would be very exciting and useful in uplifting and educating.  Therefore, a few short years ago we set out on a venture to create the ultimate Caribbean Social Network, and today we are proud to of it's growth and are totally ready to take it to the next level.

M y   C a r I b b e a n  is a social network all about everything Caribbean.  We believe this will be a great tool to link up the Caribbean community, people, lovers of everything Caribbean, and those who would like to learn about other cultures. The possibilities are endless of what we can achieve as a team at www.mycaribbean.us

M y   C a r I b b e a n has everything that the other networks offer, except our target is the Caribbean.  In addition to this being a great tool in promoting and exposing the vast cultures and traditions of the various Caribbean countries; this will be a place to meet new friends, and link up with old ones.  Being that My Caribbean is a community, this means everyone are invited.

We have been up and running for approximately 2 years, and the site is still wonderful.  We currently have over 1300 members from around the world who represent the English, Spanish and French speaking Caribbean, which is really exciting!  We currently have over 490 videos, and over 5,000 pictures.  Some of the features of My Caribbean starts with "your spot", everyone gets their own personal page that they can design the way they like.  It is a place to express and promote you.

Since this is a social network, there are many ways to be social starting with our "On-line CHAT" feature.  Immediately and instantly you can chat with anyone on the network worldwide publicly or privately.  Of course, this is a great way to save on long distance charges.

Additionally, for those of you who like to express yourself, there is a "Blog" section included in your network so you can speak your mind.  There is also (1) an "Event" Section where you can list your events and invite your friends and family to attend, as well as track your RSVP's.  (2) For those of you who like to have discussions, we have a "Forum" section where you can start your discussions and others can comment.  (3) You can post your photos.  (4) Add you favorite music.  (5) Upload you favorite videos.  And (6) Start Groups on subjects that interest you.  Plus much...much more.  The best part of this...IT's FREE!  Yup, just like all the other social networks...IT IS ALL FREE!

I would like to personally invite you to come on over to www.mycaribbean.us and "MAKE IT YOURS".  See you there, and hit me up so we can become friends!

Let me know if you like it  todd@mycaribbean.us
