Greetings Dearest Online Family and Friends:  I hope you are doing great as this new and exciting month begins!!!

Yesterday (December 1st), as I focused on the wall calendar in my home I realized in amazement delightful December is here.  The beginning of an enchanting holiday season, and one that is festive; plus very spiritual…truly full of meaning…religiously!

Already, the exterior of the homes in my neighborhood are all beautifully decorated…so full of twinkling lights, and sparkling decorations.  Gosh, the glittery décor and the beauty of it all is absolutely mesmerizing.

As I reflect on the season, my thoughts are on the fun energy that surrounds ones entire being; Weekend_Getaway-WardmanParkHotel-11.26-WDC 010.jpg (965459 bytes) the presence of love that is openly shown, the extra special moments at family get-togethers, and the joyous intimate holiday parties with close friends and colleagues.

Yes, I admit it…I do love this exceptional season quite a bit, more so because the joy of giving delights me soooo.  [And in many instances with just a simple smile and/or brief conversation.]   In fact, I am certain many of you enjoy this as well…enjoy that this season is also for giving.  Hum, with love and grace we absolutely go out of our way to make sure this special season is the brightest and happiest for our families, friends and even ourselves.  Not to mention the holiness of the season [“the birth and rebirth”] is absolutely meaningful to many, especially as we prepare to celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa.

Well…on-line friends and family, as you prepare to spread good cheer in the most delightful manner; take the time to remember that during this special season many are stressed out due to the lack of funds…without a job…without a roof over their head; and some are simply sad and depressed for various reasons.  If you see someone or know of someone going through any of what I described above, stop and listen to that person/s; help them to get back thinking positively and on a positive path.  Moreover, reach out to them and give them a helping hand…share the glory!  The joy you will bring into their life would mean the world to them!  TIS THE SEASON FOR LOVE, GIVING, HELPING, PEACE, JOY AND LAUGHTER!!!

Recently, some friends and I received some bad news about a colleague who is very ill.  In fact this gentleman (who is from Trinidad) is more than a colleague to many of us, he is considered a dear…dear friend.  Mr. Fabian Fernando has lost both kidneys and is currently on the kidney waiting list.  Of course, his home is the hospital; and the people around him are trying their best to take care of him and all his medical needs.

The moment I heard about Fabian my heart broke, because: (1) Fabian is like part of “our/the family”…a fellow Trini who came to America (specifically Maryland/Wash. DC) to try and make things better for his family.  (2) He is a young gentleman, truly lovely, and just a cool…calm type of guy; who in my opinion has not begun to fully enjoy his life yet.  And (3) I lost my brother a year ago due to kidney failure.

Finding out that a Maryland hospital is now Fabian’s home; my mind immediately ran on Fabian’s comfort, his family and all they must be enduring and doing to keep him happy and comfortable.  And most importantly, it ran on the bills.  Therefore, my first instinct and suggestion was to have a fundraiser to help Fabian and his family out with some of his monetary needs.

Our friend Andy of the Caribbean Cooperative who grew up with Fabian proceeded with organizing a fundraiser.  And it will take place next Saturday, December 10th at “The Lot” (Robey’s Towing & Transportation), 5430 Lafayette Place, Hyattsville, Maryland 20781 (301-779-9869).  There will be food, and refreshments on sale beginning at 2:00 pm – until!

I ask you to come out and support this special cause.  Help us raise some funds to help Fabian and his family.  I ask you to also say a little pray for Fabian.  Pray that his wait is not very long on the Kidney list; and most importantly he remains well!   For directions; or if you can't make it to the fundraiser and would like to make a donation call Andy @ 240-441-2600. Or you can send me an e-mail at ariousentertainment@earthlink.net or smangatal@gmail.com.

As I close out for this week, I must let you know that Trinidad and Tobago’s State of Emergency is scheduled to end on Monday, December 5th.  Yeah...Yeahhhh!!!

Gosh, over this past week while tuning into Trinidad; it was clear hearing the joy in the voices of the people.  Clear to hear, and learn how relaxed they are finally becoming (now that the SOE is days away from ending.)   But, let me tell you…the drama and bacchanal continues!

The most recent “big thing” that has been taking place over this past week was that the Prime Minister has announced to the media that she has received some death threats.  In fact her, and some of her cabinet members lives have been threatened.  I must point out though, the Prime Minister has stated her security team has not advised her to extend the state of emergency, so she has no intention of doing so.

My instinct is now that Christmas is around the corner, as well as Carnival; the State of Emergency WILL NOT be extended (due to the retailers, tourism and for various other reasons.)  However, I will NOT hold my breathe on that statement, because something is telling me otherwise; and I am hoping my feeling is wrong.  I hope everything goes smoothly over this weekend; so that the State of Emergency is lifted (FULLY AND SUCCESSFULLY) on Monday, December 5th.

We were informed that last weekend’s Soca Parang Fete in Washington DC @ the Trinidad and Tobago's Club House was quite a success.  This show featured Kenny J., Singing Francine and Dr. Whitty.  We are so happy that many of you attended this event and enjoyed yourselves as well.  Congratulations to the Organizers/Promoters!

So as we continue to celebrate Christmas Trini style in my area, let me remind you that this weekend more Parang will be taking place at the "6th Annual Parang & Back in Times Fete"

Yes, this Saturday-December 3rd, the entertaining and talented Trinidadian Calypsonian Crazy (The Original Parang Soca King) will be in our area spreading the Christmas cheer, and entertaining you with his Parang Hits; as well as his Soca hits.  And, I’m sure he will share with you some of his 2012 Soca releases/hits.  Check out Calypsonian Crazy, Saga, and the Paramin Parang Posse this Saturday night, December 3rd in Maryland at The Hampton Conference Center, 207 West Hampton Place, Capitol Heights, Maryland. From 9pm-4am.  For more details and to get information regarding purchasing your tickets, scroll down to our "Featured Events" to view the flyer.  GO OUT AND ENJOY THIS EXCITING SHOW, AND PARANG THE NIGHT AWAY!

A Special Note about an Important Day that was observed on December 1, 2011 - WORLD AIDS DAY

World Aids Day was observed yesterday, December 1, 2011, and the theme for this year is: 'Getting to Zero'.   After many...many...many years of the global fight against HIV/AIDS, this year the global community has committed to focusing on achieving 3 major targets: (1) Zero new HIV infections; (2) Zero discrimination; (3) Zero AIDS-related deaths.

This important day has been set aside since 1988 to bring awareness to AIDS;  to remind people that HIV has not gone away; and that there are many things still to be done.  Essentially, it's all about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education.  Around the globe leaders have pledged to work towards universal access to HIV and AIDS treatment, prevention and care.

HIV is a virus that attacks the body's immune system - the body's defense against diseases.  If left untreated, HIV eventually weakens the immune system so much that the person falls sick with infections known as opportunistic infections or OIs. The most serious of these OIs are called AIDS defining illnesses. When the person becomes ill with one of the AIDS defining illnesses, she/he is said to have Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

HIV can be passed on through infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids or breast milk. The most common ways HIV is passed on are:

  • Sex without a condom with someone living with HIV

  • Sharing infected needles, syringes or other injecting drug equipment

  • From an HIV-positive mother (to her child) during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding (but with effective treatment and care the risk of transmission can be greatly reduced)

The statistics are as follows: In 2010, there were 2.7 million new HIV infections (which is down from 3.2 million in 2001,) and 1.8 million people died from AIDS.  Moreover, this year (2011) people living with HIV were still subject to restrictions on their travel and/or stay in 47 countries, territories and areas.  For further details and facts check the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)).

For me though, I am deeply concerned about the  prevention of AIDS since at this time there is no cure or vaccination that can truly prevent or cure this infection.  Actually, timely diagnosis and treatment can keep the virus under control and the immune system healthy.  I have learned people on HIV treatment can live a healthy, active life, even though they may experience side effects from the treatment.  To prevent this disease, there are a few simple things that can be done and followed to be protected from this devastating  disease.

  • Avoiding casual and unprotected sex with partners of unknown sexual status

  • Using condoms correctly and consistently.

  • Getting all sexually transmitted infections treated by a qualified doctor as soon as possible, also getting your partner checked/treated

  • Insisting on sterile disposable syringes and needles for injections

  • Not sharing needles and syringes for injecting drugs

Further, I am extremely concerned about bringing awareness to this disease (AIDS)... it's truly very important to me; especially now that I have learned that the rate of people diagnosed with the HIV infection IS INCREASING in my country Trinidad drastically.  In fact, sadly Trinidad is among 3 countries that has reported an increase in citizens becoming infected with the HIV disease.  Therefore, below I have listed some of what you can do to contribute to bringing awareness.

  • Find out facts about HIV and talk to your friends, family and colleagues about HIV- make sure they know the reality, not the myths.

  • Know your HIV status: get tested if you have put yourself at risk.

  • Talk to all new sexual partners about using condoms. Using a condom during sex is the best way to protect yourself and your partner from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

  • If someone tells you they are HIV positive, treat them with respect and don’t tell others without their agreement.

  • Wear a red ribbon as a symbol of your support for everyone affected by HIV...and to raise awareness.
